Default EuroSport & Technisat Skystar2

Hi,

Newbie here. Hopefully you can help in my aim to capture as much WTA tennis as pos (for DVD and DIVX).

First up, let’s see if I’ve got it right as to which EuroSport versions are available to us in the UK:

EuroSport International: Analogue - Astra 1G (19.2E) - FREE

German EuroSport: DVB-S FTA - Astra 1H (19.2E) - FREE

British EuroSport 1: DVB-S – Astra 2B (28.2E) - Sky - PAY

British EuroSport 2: DVB-S – Astra 2A (28.2E) - Sky – PAY

Correct?

Technisat Skystar2: I’ve searched this and a few other forums and I’m sure I read Analoguesat saying this card could not capture the paid-for Sky channels, which would include British ES1 & ES2, no? So even if I’ve signed up for the relevant Sky package, I can’t capture ES1/2 with this card?

Also, how many channels can I capture at any one time with this card? I guess it depends on number of tuners it has? Can’t see that confirmed anywhere.

I don’t know what content variences there maybe between those 4 ES channels, but incase I need to monitor, if not capture from all four at once… Do I need more than one dish to switch between those four versions of ES? Does the dish have to move those 9 degrees between those two satellites?

Hello there deisel weisel and welcome to the forum. With the Skystar 2 I think the only channel you would be able to view is the German Eurosport as you can't watch the Sky encrypted stuff on 28E with it or the analogue satellite as the skystar 2 is digital only. The SS2 only has one tuner so you can only record what you are watching. The other option you have to capture sky is to connect a Sky Digibox to a TV Card in your pc if you already have a sky digibox with a subscription. Whichever way you do it capturing stuff onto your hard drive takes a lot of disk space and a pretty powerful pc. I am sure one of the other more experienced members will correct me if I am wrong.

Hope this helps and once again welcome to SatelliteHelp

As Jonty says, you can only watch or record a single channel at any one time using a single tuner.

What you can do, is to use a linux based satellite receiver like the dreambox and read your sky card and network the dreambox to your skystar 2 card and watch or record 2 separate channels, one on the dreambox and one on the Skystar 2 card in your pc.

For the reception of the two satellites, your best option in my opinion, would be to have two dishes each with a twin lnb. If the second dish was motorised, you could then pick up any one of the many satellites that have direct line-of-site from your location.

Not that it's any use to you in this case, because all of those four channels are on different transponders, but AltDVB will allow you to watch (and also to record) two different channels from the same transponder using PIP mode.

I've just tried it and it works great. My PC would be regarded as pretty low-spec these days with an Athlon XP 2500 CPU, but the results are as good as recording a single channel.

I watch the German Eurosport on my SkyStar 2 on the PCI in the PC and can record programs onto the PC.
For cycle and ski races the German language commentary isnt a problem as we know the racers and get their split times etc displayed onscreen.

I also watch the International Eurosport on an old Pace analogue receiver with commentary in the English Language. For cycle and ski races I believe this is the same transmission the Germans receive as the Director sometimes fails to switch over to the English commentators in time for the opening summary!!

I intend to get 28E FTA shortly but wont receive British Eurosport as I dont want to pay Sky prices just for this one channel. Besides, Sky will interrupt their cycle and ski races if they want to have an instudio discussion on the problems of a tennis player or a girl skater.

I'm worried about my future reception of Eurosport.
Britain is to drop analogue broadcasting in the near future and Sky may then force Eurosport to drop their analogue cover to Britain. Thankfully Germany is not in such a rush to embrace digital only transmissions.

Sky have nothing to do with it whatsoever.

If SES get their way analogue Eurosport will end on December 31st 2008. They want all analogue satellite broadcasts of air on this date so they can use the valuable transponder space for more digital broadcasts.
