Im the school technician for a high school in the Scottish Borders - I currently run 275 network machines, and 1150 users. And Im horribly underpaid.....!
Say hello if you run a school network. If you are a pupil trying to get admin access dont even bother - Ive seen most of the tricks over the years!

My daughter's school had a great little network installed three or four years back using some grant money, but nobody knew how to use it.
I volunteered to get something up and running, set up an intranet for both the kids and teachers, run an after-school computer club, run talks/classes on various things, manage the setup of infrastructure to support class projects, build a website for the school - everything. I wrote a detailed four-page document at the request of the only computer-savvy teacher there who was also keen to get something sorted. Guess what the response was? Nothing. They didn't even bother to get back to me > ![]() I teach my kids I(C)T at home. What they learn as part of the national curriculum is nowhere near enough as far as I'm concerned.

Thats shocking - but typical Im afraid. Theres plenty of money to throw at new kit, but no-one ever thinks about who is going to run the bloody system after its put in. Scottish Borders Council has a dedicated team of regional admins to look after the basic stuff, but with each team member looking after one high school and up to 10 feeder primary schools even here we are struggling. As Im a school employee with most admin rights and can run rings round some of the regional guys we tend to get abandoned until something goes horribly wrong......
