Default cam cards

I'm all new to this cam card thing, but have just purchased a new Pace HD satellite box. However, on unpacking the box discovered that it has a cam slot !!

I have a current sky box and fixed satellite dish pointing to Astra 29.2.

1) Can someone please advise whether it is worthwhile getting a cam card when the dish is fixed - most people seem to have motorised dishes?

2) If it is worthwhile, which cam should I get and what would it give me?? in terms of additional channels......

Thanks for any help

Dave

Hello Dave. Glad you could join us

The only encrypted stuff on 28.2E is in NDS Videoguard ('Sky's encryption') for which there is no CAM.

If you were to buy a Diablo CAM (or a T-Rex Supermodul V4.6) and put another dish up at 19.2E you could currently have the Premiere package open, including the HD channels.

If you don't want a second dish, you could swap your minidish for a larger one that can receive from several satellites in one hit (with multiple LNBs).

Let us know what you're thinking now

Thanks BGonaSTICK.
I think the option of a bigger dish is not really feasible so the only options I have as I see it would be:

a) Motorise the existing dish - is this easy?
b) move the existing dish to 19.2E. - I presume to then receive the premier package, you would have to take out some form of subscription with Sky??

Second question:

The pace box DS810XE says it will receive free to air programmes, however, when it was connected up it didnt seem to receive ITV3? but did receive ITV2? Why is this?

Thanks again

Dave

Premiere is broadcast by an entirely different company primarily for Germany. It has nothing to do with Sky at all.

It is open at the moment VPS using a Diablo cam and other platforms as Stated by Stick.
(VPS = Viewable by Pirate Solution)

Every now and then certain packages become avaliable. At the moment Premier is open and TPS is open :?

(although i am not sure which platforms currently work with TPS. )

TPS & Premier works on my patched TMS1500 CI+ receiver I even had a sniff of Digital+ this morning for a few hours.

With regards to ITV3 I'm guessing you need to tune your box to receive it.

Frequency 10906
Polorisation V
FEC 22000
SR 5/6

Yes, I have a feeling something changed with ITV3 pids a little while back, so just re-scan that transponder and it should spring to life.

A full legit subscription to Premiere will be expensive, but one of the above CAMs programmed with the latest software will open it with no further ado.

If you move the existing dish, you will lose all the BBC/ITV etc. stuff.

It's not worth motorising anything less than a 60cm dish IMO. Your current dish is probably 43cm. 60cm isn't too big-looking though, and motorising it isn't a problem for a half-competant DIYer.

You cant motorise most Sky dishes because of the built-in LNB skew.

I've just started and have a fortec star zeta with a 2Ci CAM slot. If I buy a diablo CAM as suggeasted is it just plug and play if I scan for transponders without a subscription card or do these CAM's need to be set up or programmed in some way?

You programme them with special modified firmware which have keys in them for some pay services. (NOT SKY UK!!)

In all honesty its probably cheaper and easier to buy a patched Technomate TMS 1000D Receiver There is a lot of support for the TM 1000 series at the moment At the moment you can get TPS France, Premier Germany and Digital + Spain on the TM Polsat was also open a few days ago until they rolled the keys

There should be plenty of help here should you decide to buy a cam. As far as i am aware they can either be programmed with a loader card or a CAS3 programmer :?

I have heard of certain people saying they can use the PCMCIA slot on their laptops however i have no idea how much truth there is in this :|

Both Cam and programmers are readily available on eBay and most probably at your local satellite shop

We have knowledgeable guys here who can help you with CAMs, but to give you a rough idea, a 'cheap' second-hand CAM is around £50 (Dragon/old T-Rex) whilst the new super-CAMs were nearer £100 (T-Rex 4.6) or £80 (Diablo) last time I looked.

Add to that a £25 - £50 serial programmer and cards (or a £55 CAS3 programmer) and the price is significantly more than the £60 a new TM-1000D will cost you. A TM-1500CI+ Super will cost around £95.

Your choice. Ask before you buy, and decide how much you have to spend before diving in. If you want to run a programmable card, then a CAM is advisable - they tend to get too hot for your average card-reader slot, and sometimes don't work in them anyway. Don't know if your box has a card slot or not.

Have a read through this section to get a feel for what's involved in cards and CAMs. It sounds scarier than it is though.
