Default Car Insurance

On the way to the football today my son had a prang in his car, he ran into the back of another at a roundabout.

Now the car he was driving is registered in my name, and he is a named driver on the insurance policy, although the car is in reality his.

The damage to the other car was minimal (a scraped bumper) and my son offered to pay for the repair, rather than go through the insurance, but the other driver refused to do this as it was a company car.

My question is this, is there any way that I can avoid it going through the insurance? as I don't want it to affect my sons future car Insurance Premium when he insures in his own name.

Anyone have any idea?

You should be able to make the offer directly to the other guys insurance company. They won't give a monkies who pays for it as long as it gets paid.

Thanks for the quick reply nanochickin I thought I must be able to so, how do I avoid them giving me a ridiculous quote for the repair?

And, as my son gave the name of our insurance company, won't his insurance company automatically contact them?

Probably, so get in quick.

You can only hope that the quote isn't too high. I don't think it matters who's name the car was registered in, only who was driving.

I think you will find that it will a condition of the other driver's employment that any accidents involving a company car have to be reported to the employer's personnel department and the claim made officially to his company's insurers. What happens after that may be negotiable but the two insurance companies will definitely contact each other. (I'm in financial services). The other question is - Has "fergiz's" no-claims bonus been protected - it can usually be done by paying a small extra premium, but not, of course AFTER the event. Hope that's helpful.

Yes diapson, I bought a new car (3 years old now) and I took out insurance on it, but I didn't use my full no-claims bonus on it that I had acrued. I was prepared to start from scratch as far as the no-claims bonus went, but the insurance company gave me a "free" 60% no-claims because I had a full no claims bonus on my "other" car.

I gifted my "other" car to my son and Insured it in my name using my full no-claims bonus and had my son as a named driver, I also protected the no-claims bonus. It was this car that my son had the bump in on Saturday.

What a blinkin' rip-off car insurance is, and how ridiculously complicated. Many families now have multiple cars and/or multiple drivers, but the insurers just love to keep on taking instead of fairly adjusting according to the relative risk.

My wife and I have to do the stupid NCB dance (whatever happened to the insurance industry's one-time pet phrase 'No Claims Discount'?) every year, but we only have one car.

I also have a bike, and even though I built the NCB up from zero over several years just to keep my NCB's separate, I've now been told that either one would affect the other >

Soon they'll want to take account of any claims on my house, medical and pet insurance!

There has to be a fairer way.
