Default Humax HDCI200 a couple of Questions

New to the forum, hello all.

The above receiver arrives next week to replace my current Humax F1-CI. I have a fixed dish pointing at Astra & Hotbird. The HDCI2000 and a DVD player will be connected to a Sony amp by HDMI, from there to HDMI2 on the TV. Sky HD to HDMI1.

The Questions:

1. Does the HDCI output DD 5.1 over the HDMI cable, or will I require an optical cable?

2. Is an HDMI cable included with the Humax?

Sorry to be the first to reply to my post but can you explain why the 'a' in cable has been changed to a @. Just curious.

Hi Mick, welcome to the forum

The @ is to stop the search engines picking up references to cable TV (N-T-L etc). We are a satellite site, and the admin team have little or no experience with cable TV systems.

Hi Mick, welcome to the forum.

Nice to see someone getting the most from their HD telly!

HDMI can carry 1080p video and 8 channels (i.e. up to DD 7.1) of 192kHz audio too - it's by far the best domestic A/V standard yet, and effectively supercedes DVI which is video only. Early devices only passed DD 2.0 over HDMI, even though it had the capability to carry more. I'm not sure if the Humax passes the full 5.1 or not, though I would certainly think so.

You should know though, that there is precious little stuff on satellite with 5.1 audio other than Sky and Premiere.

Not sure if the Humax comes with a cable. A few guys here have bought them, so maybe they will read this and let you know.

You may want to replace it with a better quality cable anyway. I'm not really a cable-snob like some, but I wouldn't expect it to come with anything better than a very basic cable if anything.

I'm mainly interested in German channels. 'Wetten das', 1915 our time on ZDF is in 5.1 this Sat. There are a few 5.1 radio channels as well. Very occasionally there HD transmissions but as you say few and far between.

These websites give a weeks program guide to the channels I mainly watch:

www.DasErste.de

The Humax comes with a HDMI cable and a scart lead.

If you are interested in surround sound then I assume you have an AV amplifier in which case the optical connection would be far better for sound. Does the Humax have optical output? I imagine it has as even my dreambox 7000 has.

The Humax does have optical out. I'm in Germany on Wednesday and will buy one there if prices are OK. One thing I'm concerned about with buying in Germany, is the manual, I don't read German very well and can't find an English manual anywhere on-line.

I'm sure a 'dog ate my manual' begging letter to Humax will see one winging its way to you through the post.

Assuming the wingers as the Post Office are having a good day that is :spite:

Unless anyone here has a .pdf or a manual & scanner?

I've just checked and can't find one online either. Not even a German one. Bad.
