Default Skype moves into TV - was "The Venice Project™", now "Joost™"

The founders of the Skype internet telephony service are launching what they call the "world's first broadcast quality internet TV service."

The service is to be called Joost, and will allow broadcasters to show their programmes on the Internet. The creator promises it will be a "piracy-proof" service that will ease copyright fears of media owners.

Skype chief executive, Frederik de Wahl, showing off the service today in London, said the service would provide a different experience from other internet television ventures in that it would replicate the complete television experience, and allow for channel surfing.

De Wahl added: "It's full-screen, broadcast quality, you've got instant channel flipping, and interactivity - a viewer can come to us and get all their TV needs."

The service is currently being trialled with thousands of people who have download the software to try it out. Current content includes sports, documentaries and music, with the full launch taking place in the next few months.
