Default Adding more TV Channel

I am totally new to Satellite TV.
I just get myself a satellite dish and decoder recently. The vendor installed them for me and setting probably 50-100 channels for me. Everything working fine and I am satisfy with it.

However, all the TV channels were accidentally deleted few days ago. I tried hard to restore the channels, but only successfully restored part of them, by selecting "restore default channels". I can't get the other channels back. I contacted the vendor, but he is so busy that he never turn up after a few telephone calls.

I would like to know if anyone could help me to add more program / channels.

My location:
Sarawak, Malaysia.
40 24' 58" N
1140 0' 31" E

I notice that there is a "Add New Program" option, which I think is for this purpose. Information required to add program are as below:
1. LNB freq
2. Trans freq
3. Symbol rate
4. Polarity
5. 22k (on/off)

When I browse thru my current program, I notice 2 LNB freqs being used: 5150 and 11300.
My decoder brand is SanSing from China. All the channels in the default setting are TV channels from China.

Help is very much appreciated. Thanks.

Hello QliQ, welcome to the forum.

First off, I would say that I don't know your receiver, or even what channels you could expect from Malaysia, but the same principles apply as for any other setup.

Most of the items of information you list below, are definitions for a transponder - not a channel.

The transponder definition is usually made up of four pieces of data:

1) Transponder frequency
2) Polarisation
3) Symbol Rate
4) FEC

One transponder may have many channels.

The idea is that you enter all the transponder details for each transponder on the satellite to which your dish is aligned.

Once you have done this, you need to 'scan' the transponder(s). This is a process whereby the receiver requests all the channel information directly from the satellite, and stores the details (PIDS for audio and video, technical details of the encryption used, if any, and a channel name amongst other things).

This is where your channel details come from.

Have a look through your receiver's menu structure for something like 'automatic transponder scan' or 'scan satellite' etc. and follow the instructions.

You should not alter the values 5150 and 11300, as they look to be the LO (local oscillator) frequencies for the LNB, and will remain the same throughout. They are effectively low and high band, with the 22kHz tone (on/off) used to automatically switch between the two bands when you change channels. Leave all this alone.

I'm not sure which satellite your dish is aligned to. Can you tell us?

Let's say it's Asiasat 3S at 105.5°E as an example. You can look up all the transponder definitions you need to manually enter by looking on lyngsat.com.

Here is the listing for Asiasat 3S - home of STAR TV

Hope this helps

Stick is right - firstly we need to identify which satellite your dish is aligned onto - theres loads serving Asia! If you can list some of the channels you have we can probably help identify the satellite

BINGO! It's Asiasat 3S. I browsed thru the website last night and confirmed that it is Asiasat 3S. YES! I get 70+ free channels now. It is real fun to discover more channels. Thanks a lot for the help from you guys. I appreciate it a lot.

2 more questions.
1. I see that the listing always has a number behind the Symbol Rate. Example: 27500 - 3/4. What is the "3/4" means. I do not use that figure when I adding new channels.
2. There are other satellites listed next to Asiasat 3S, like "AsiaStar at 105_0°E", "Express A2 at 103_0°E" and etc... Does it means this satellites are close to Asiasat 3S? Can I receive signal from other satellites without aligning my dish? My dish has no motor.

Thanks a lot guys.

Hey, great news!

Well done

Don't move your dish, but you should be able to at least get a signal from Asiastar at 105E. I doubt whether your receiver will be able to tune the low frequencies used there though. There are three regionalised Worldspace packages at 105E - most channels appear to be encrypted. A second (suitable) receiver should get them, but it's probably not worth it. Give it a try on your existing receiver though.

The two adjacent satellites, Cakrawarta 1 at 107.7E and Express A2 at 103E are a bit too far away from 105.5E, and they are both in 'inclined orbit' which means that they wobble about a little too. I think that you can forget these two satellites.

The other figure you mention - '3/4' etc. is the FEC - Forward Error Correction. Some receivers auto-detect it. It's a sort of parity-checking system whereby extra data is sent with the audio and video data. If your reception is not perfect, let's say your receiver is dropping 1% of the data from the stream due to poor weather, the additional data can be used by the receiver to 'repair' the damaged data. The FEC value indicates how much extra data is sent for this purpose. The more data, the more resilient the signal.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the reply.
I tried enter the setting for Asiastar at 105E, but no success. One thing I am in doubt. My decoder is requesting for H / V (polarity), but the Asiastar at 105E is providing R / L. What does that means? Does that means my receiver is not compatible with this satellite?

The are 2 types of polarity

linear (Horizontal and Vertical) and circular (Righthand circular and Lefthand circular). Whilst it is possible to get signals off wrong polarity transmissions (Ive done it using a circular polarity lnb on H/V transmissions) theres a horrible signal loss so you need high transmission downlink powers to start with.

AsiaStar 105E is an L- band radio satellite - you can forget it as you have no chance of picking it up with conventional sat gear.
