Good idea.

I'm impressed with my USB hard drive. Spins up quickly, powers down shortly after the PC, shunts data around at a fair rate of knots, is hot-swapable and portable. It also takes a load off my PC's already overworked PSU.

Everyone should have one

SAT-WORLD, can you tell us how the drive is connected? I assume it is via IDE as its a slave. Also how is it formatted?

Hi Jim
The hard drive was connected via IDE and the format was NTFS,when it was in the PC.
Now that theTopfield4000pvr has formatted the drive,I don't what the file structure is.
Any new ideas/solutions,that have come to mind?
Thanks.

IDE and NTFS should see the drive ok unless it has been partitioned and the second section not formatted or assigned.

Now it is in the Topfield, perhaps the windows programme from http://www.topfield.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=15 may help although not having a Topfield I cant try it out.

So that's why its not being recognised :?
As I initially partitioned it,when I realised Windows wasn't recognising the full size of the hard drive,I didn't continue with formatting the second partition.
I've removed the hard drive from the Topfield,as I said earlier,as it totally locked up the receiver, despite several reboots and factory resets
It now in the USB case, using TFTool:http://www.kluesener99.de/tftool/index_en.html,tells me the hard drive is in the FAT24 and showing 279GB.
Will Windows recognise it and its full capacity?,if I install it back in the PC.
Thanks for the Tap software link,Jim,though I already have the software.
Thanks Jim

I would stongly recommend putting it back in the PC. Then get yourself a copy of the Hrens boot CD which has Partition Magic on it and recover the complete hard drive and format it.

Windoze could do it but often makes a pigs ear of it.

Following your advice,Jim.
I reinstalled the drive, back in to the PC,and guess what.......
Windows recognised the correct size of the drive :?
As I couldn't find the latest copy of Hiren's boot cd,and I was wary of the older versions(complete with hidden trojans )
I partitioned and reformatted the drive using Windows disk management, and it went perfectly smoothly.
Note:This time I didn't install the Samsung Dynamic drive overlay software
So,finally after a couple of months,I have a fully working secondary hard drive(all 300GB).
Well,I did for 2 whole days, then the PC,decide to play the Locking up game, which lasted for another 2 days ,That was fun.....not >
However, just removing the ide and power cable, and reconnecting has restored the PC,back to fully working status.
Thanks to everyone, who contributed, with their help.

I had a PC once that kept locking up every couple if days - the only way I could get it restarted was to pull out the IDE connector and re-fit it.

Turned out to be a bad IDE controller on the motherboard which was eventually replaced with a nice new one (the motherboard that is, not the controller).
