Are we allowed to ask for specific computer help?
Well,we'll soon find out. I installed a 300gb hard drive as a secondary drive(slave),on Windows XP Pro(Service pack 2) However I discovered that only 127gb was being recognised, despite installing the software utility, that is supposed to overcome this problem, recommended by the manufacturer(Samsung),and then flashing the Bios. I was advised that I needed a PCI host adaptor. I then installed the host adaptor,Windows recognises it,however, the hard drive drive doesn't appear under hard drives,so there is no way of accessing it. Furthermore the computer refuses to even boot up,after installing and connecting the hard drive to the host adaptor. I enabled ESCD in the bios, hoping that this would the let computer boot up,but no luck. So the hard drive is disconnected from the host adaptor at present, and doing a fat lot of good. Any practical advice would be great. Thanks. |

If your PC's BIOS is supporting LBA48 then try this: http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;303013

This sounds to me like a motherboard "issue" :? ; check the website for the motherboard manufacturer, and then flash the bios to the most recent version (I am assuming this is an older -- perhaps significantly so -- motherboard, and the bios is far out of date). I don't automatically flash my bios with every new version that comes out, but if I need functionality that is available in a new version, then I'll do it.
![]() Are you sure the instructions you're getting for overcoming these limits aren't for Win98? WinXP has no inherent limits, and actually may overcome some motherboard limits on its own. ![]() Any of this sound helpful? Rob

Here is what Microsoft says (see link above):
By default, the original release version of Windows XP Home Edition and of Windows XP Professional do not have 48-bit LBA support. So it is not Win98 only issue. |

You could always look on the HDD manufactures website to see if there is any Dynamic Drive Overlay software available for that drive.
I have to use it on my daughters old Compaq machine which cant see over 8gb without it. Since Compaq was taken over by HP her machines bios files have been removed off the site so the bios update is no longer an option. ![]() You could also try splitting the drive into 3 partitions using the administrative tools in control panel. Settings (main menu) -> Contrl panel -> Administrative tools -> Computer management -> storage -> disk management. I have the same problem with my server which is still running MS NT4 server ops: It wont see above 8gb until SP6a has been installed so i have to have just an 8gb partition on a 160gb drive and then set the rest of the drive up after the OS has been completely set up. I have to use the above method once SP6a is installed. ![]() I know NT4 is really old now but it works and does what i need it to do so whats the point of changing it. ![]() Nano

Thanks RobH and Nanochikin, for the suggestions.
As I said,in my first post,I have flashed the BIOS and installed the Samsung Dynamic Drive Overlay ,which they call ONTRACK. The motherboard is the discontinued Soltek SL-75KAV:_http://www.soltek.de/soltek/product/products_all.php?isbn_st=SL-75KAV I think,I may have to take the 3 partition route. |

Mmm, or a new mobo.
I have several of my drives partitioned up for various reasons (none enforced) and I find it a handy way of managing my data. You could also chuck the drive into an external USB box and fit a smaller one internally if you need a contiguous drivespace. I've seen USB cases for a fiver on eBay.

Thanks for that suggestion BG.
I tried sticking in to my Pvr,but it was having not of it,locked up everytime. So anyone thinking of exceeding the recommended hard drive size of 160gb for the Topfield4000pvr....DONT ![]() Fortunately,I do have USB case ,so the hard drive is heading there. |
