Default German tv in the UK

Hello,

I have a mythtv box running knoppmyth with 2 nova-t tuners. My pakner is from germany and we would like to be able to watch german tv.
I have been reading this site for a few hours now and i think i have a very very basic idea of what i need. Please can you confirm and help me.

I have a sky minidish which is pointing in its normal sky possition. The dish was fitted before we moved into this house and was working fine over a year ago but has not been used since.

If i am correct i will need to move the possition of the dish to the astra 1 19.2E and i should be then able to pickup channels on a normal sat recever.

My plan is to install a Nova-S DVB-S card(or another) in my knoppmyth system so we can watch german channels on there.

in case you are wondering knoppmyth is a linux distrobution that is ment only for running mythtv and therefor is very easy to install compaired with having to compile it youself etc.

i look forward to your resonces.

thanks

For German TV you will indeed need a dish pointing at 19E. Most of the German channels are currently fta although some of the private channels may be going scrambled later in the year.

Yes you should be ok with a minidish. You may find theres not much rain fade margin in really bad weather, but go for it!

Thanks for your help.

Once i have it working on a mini dish the chances are i will go out and buy a better dish to run it on.

Just trying not to spend too much and find out i cant get it going.

I plan on using a sky box to start with, whats the best way og positioning the dish using a sky box as i dont have a singnal tester?

You may have problems with the Sky Digibox if it has one of the firmwares which gives you the newer light blue backgrounded EPG update on it

I have read somewhere that if the digibox doesn't get a signal from 28.2 it will start to play up big time. Its basically Uncle Rupe not wanting you to use your digibox for anything else other than Sky

I have also seen reports although i cannot confirm it that some black Pace Digiboxes are imune from this as they won't accept the latest firmware updates. They wouldn't update to the new type EPG so they are still using the old darker blue EPG software which will not accept the new 4 figure radio numbers.

These boxes will be ok for some stations as they don't have the code which causes the problems

The only other problem is that the Digibox will only accept symbol rates of 27500 and 22000 which severely restricts your viewing. A lot of providers are now using symbol rates around 30000 now, although saying that there is still a lot on 27500 and 22000

If you look on ebay you might find something more suitable. I have seen FTA boxes go for as little as £10

If you only want FTA stuff I can recommend the FortecStar Lifetime Classic. They don't usually sell for much more than £20-25 so its good if your on a budget. They are also fantastic for setting up with as the signal meter reacts very quickly on them. Its the only reason i still have mine

If you want a bit more i would suggest a TMS 1000 D as they are patchable. You can get German PTV broadcaster Premiere on them at the moment, aswell as TPS france and D+ from Spain. There is also a lot of stuff open using BISS and CW (I think it means Constant Control Word)

Hope this helps

Thanks once again, i only plan on using the sky box for the setup and once im setup and im happy that i can get it working i am going to buy i card for my mythtv system.

Then i will be able to watch, pause, record etc etc along with only having one box under my tv.
