I'm aware that a MTVystem will prob cost more but I'm wondering if it will give me more in terms of flexibly

I would like to know what as the availability of patches for mythTV to open channels and which pci cards people would rrecommendto be used or know to be supported

Well I have a dreambox and a PC card and I definitely think the dreambox is far superior. Probably because I am sitting in an armchair when I am using it as opposed to a pc chair.

The pc card will very much depend upon the processor and video capabilities of your pc/laptop but it will show DVB S HD channels. Not much there though.

I always feel as though I am slumming it when I am relegated to the pc card to watch footy when there is something 'er indoors wants to watch on the tv.

I get the impression that MythTV is more of a project-for-the-sake-of-it rather than the reliable and stable implementation that IS the Dreambox.

At least with the Dreambox there's a quality end-product, whilst still having the support of a huge development community. The Dreambox could happily reside in any consumer's home, if you know what I mean.

Just my opinion of course, and I've never used MythTV personally.

I have been using it for 3 months now and i love it.

Try knoppmyth and see how you get on.

think you are mixing to things a little there:

mythtv is an aplication, knoppmyth is a distro to make installing and configuring the aplication easier

since Ubuntu is Debian based im guessing it must use apt under the skin for its package management

so as long as the repositorises have been set up running something like apt-get install mythtv should do it for you ( you must be root )

Ubuntu may even have a gui to do this

is that any clearer ?

lol clear as mud m8. If you search the site for my name and mythtv you will come up with a very long thread. I am ok with it once I get the mysql database business sorted out. Installed it again tonight and have the same problem as the last 3 times I have installed it. Thanks for pointing out that knoppmyth was a distro I just thought it was an easier version of myth. Off to read the long thread from August now to get it installed properly again.

Knoppmyth sets up all your database and most of the internal working system bits.

You just need to configure mythtv its self and then configure any remote etc you plan on using.
