I just run the backend by using either sudo mythbackend or mythbackend. I am using Ubuntu Dapper Drake by the way. This is what I get from mythbackend.

Default Re: MythTV Channels.conf

Hi Jontydog,

mythfilldatabase is used toeither download program listings from the Web, or from EIT data. It should be run.

Rather than running the backend from the command line, I would start it instead from the script meant to do this.

Code:
sudo /etc/init.d/mythtv-backend start
That script, at least on my system, has lots of extra lines to start the daemon.

This may stop it core dumping.

Cheers
Ferg

Default Re: MythTV Channels.conf

Code:
Hi Jontydog.

that actually looks quite positive. Two points: (1) you must be root to run the scripts in /etc/init.d.

(2) The error message you are seeing is due to using sudo for starting the script. I would guess it would not happen if you are proper root instead.
e.g.
Code:
% su
% /etc/init.d/mythtv-backend stop
% /etc/init.d/mythtv-backend start
You'll need the root password here. If you do not have it then you can cheat by using sudo to run su. i.e.
Code:
sudo su
However, I'm actually fairly sure that mythbackend is actually starting OK, regardless of these errors. Take the first time you ran restart: [code ] mandy@linux:~$ sudo /etc/init.d/mythtv-backend restart Restarting MythTV server: mythbackendNo /usr/bin/mythbackend found running; none killed. . Session management error: Authentication Rejected, reason : None of the authenti cation protocols specified are supported and host-based authentication failed . mandy@linux:~$ sudo /etc/init.d/mythtv-backend start mythbackend already running, use restart instead.
when you ran start again it detected it was running, so prompted you to run restart instead.

It also did the same here. Restart would give an error if ti was not already running.

Code:
mandy@linux:~$ sudo /etc/init.d/mythtv-backend restart
Restarting MythTV server: mythbackend.
Session management error: Authentication Rejected, reason : None of the authenti cation protocols specified are supported and host-based authentication failed
Try running restart again, then run Mythfrontend (as a normal user) and see if it can connect OK.

Good luck

so it seems that the backend is running ok but I am still not sure.

Hi Jontydog.

That looks positive. Don't start it from the command line though. Only start it from the script.

You can add that script to the default run levels of Ubuntu, and then the script will always run.

Can you connect with Mythfrontend?

Cheers

hmm what about the segmentation fault? How do I start the script without using the command line though?

Sorry Jonty, I tweaked two of your posts above to remove the 'strikethrough' effect caused by the square brackets at the end of these lines:

Code:
2007-03-01 03:01:14.681 Total desktop dim: 1024x768, with 1 screen.
I just made it '(s)' instead. Hope that's OK.
