That's some scam! In the first place, the Inland Revenue NEVER offer you money back - you have to claim it. I heard of someone who had been paying too much tax for years because they had not returned a form to the Revenue when they retired, and, at the age of 73, at last managed to get several thousand pounds back from them, but only after I helped them out (as a financial adviser).
In the second place, the Revenue never send e-mails, it's always in writing and posted. That way, they can demand tax and during the two days in the post between them and you and the other two days it takes for your reply to get to them, they charge you 4 days' interest on your tax demand - if you get my drift. There's also another day or two between their generating a demand and sending it out, so we're now up to 6 day's interest which they can charge you - and they do. I once was charged an extra 20p on a very small additional demand - that was two day's interest for 6 months!!

LOL, my wife used to be a tax accountant before she got a proper job, so the Inland Revenue never owe us any money
![]() Some of the folks who work there are really nice, but as a body they are the scum of the Earth. You can never beat the Revenue, but you can make bloody sure that you never pay them a penny too much. Sadly, I guess that 95% of the population do in one way or another.

I am not sure how good the IR folks are but there is one thing I am pretty certain: they haven't got a clue about simple math.
One another occasion they have sent me a letter stating I owe'em 1600 quid. I called them to ask why and they recalculated it. Then I receved letter that they owe me 1300 quid. Woohoo, I thought - nice Christmas present. Then another letter came stating that they recalculated again and this time I owe'em 500 quid. Again, I called them and then they sent me a cheque for 400 quid. How for Christ sake this could happen? I was always sure that 2+2=4. Apparently, not in IR universe - sometimes it is 5 or 3 or 7 but it is NEVER 4.

The only ones I found sh!t-hot were the Vat persons. Very straightforward to deal with and only needed to do the job once.
