Default Linux and SS2

Well impressed with Ubuntu and my SS2. Installed Dapper Drake version of Ubuntu last night and installed Kaffeine multi media program. Easy to set up and use (but no plugins for opening channels) Scanned Hotbird through the loopthrough on my TM and its 1169 tv stations which is no where near what I had using windows even after all my problems with leads etc and the diseqc works properly I just have to put the TM in standby. Very impressed. Mythtv is also installed but I need to sort out how to get a channels.conf file to use as there is a known problem with myth and scanning channels.

Well, when you have it all installed, you can tell me how, if you will. I cant get my SS2 card recognised openly although it lists it in devices. PLEASE

I just installed Kaffeine from the Synaptic Package Manager m8. The Ubuntu Forums are a pretty good place for help but seem a lot like the other Satellite forums in that they like you to find the answers for yourself and from what I have seen can be a bit abrupt and curt with newbies. If you run lspci from terminal and the skystar 2 is there then it is installed and should run. There is also a package in Synaptic called dvb-utils install that too. If I can help any more let me know

Ok Jonty, I have kaffeine installed and working ok. The scan takes a long time but seems to pick up all channels ok.

Is there a method of installing emus to decrypt channels like Progdvb and Altdv on windoze? I would love to link to my dreambox as I do in Altdvb.

Not that I know of Jim but I am still looking around for other methods There is another program called VDR and apparently that has similar plugins but they are very well hidden. Going to have a go at vdr today now I have sorted out mythtv (very slow on my machine)

Any of the standard i386 Linux plugins should work on Ubuntu (Newcamd for example) as long as you can find an MD-plugin compliant viewer.

That might be easier said than done though

I have an old PC going begging at the moment, so might join the fun.

I don't understand the newcamd plug in to start with was more after plugins like vplug. Had a go with VDR but its even more complicated than mythtv I have got vdr working in a tiny little screen but it is picking up my Medion TV Capture card and not the skystar.

Here's my guide to newcamd.

It's pretty old now, but all the basics still hold true.

cheers for that Stick. Am I right in thinking that its for a Dreambox? I need to do a lot more reading up on the subject and get VDR running as I want it before I look into this properly. Get that spare pc out of yours and join the Linux-ss2-VDR gang I highly recommend going to the Dapper Drake Ubuntu not Edgy Eft as that apparently has a few bugs still.

Well my brain is frazzled now. Decided not to bother with mythtv and VDR and all that stuff as its too much hassle to get channels opened up. Going to use Kaffeine as a pvr as its very simple to use I have sky digi on my SS2 as that is the only thing I am likely to record off. I have TVTime to watch the scrambled stuff on as the TM is connected to the Medion Capture card so I am quite happy with that.
