Yesterday's late night (or should I say 'early morning'?

) I finally completed the softmod on my fat PS2.
I also installed excellent software, called SMS (short for Simple Media System) and spent some considerable amount of time trying to make it work.

In short, now my PS2 is fetching files straight from Slug via SMB! No need for PC servers and such. And it plays DivX and MP3.
Not quite XBMC, but still very useful thing

Nice. Funnily enough I was thinking about that a few days ago... I was going to install the PS2-Linux thing and do something similar, but I have a slimline PS2

I might give this a go though!

Well.. I was thinking about Linux on PS2 but then ruled against it. I prefer to keep it as a gaming console with some additional capabilites, like media player.

The easiest part was to install SMS and make it work with Rad client. Samba was a bit more difficult, primerily because of my stupidity. I forgot that PS2 is Unix machine and need configuration files to be created in Unix format rather than Windows. Once I figured that out, it worked straight away.

Should be possible as long as you can soft- or hardmod your PS2. The SMS is simply yet another application, which should be launched from uLE menu.

Yup. Read about Independence exploit. This is what I used for the sofmod.
And here is universal solution. I haven't tried it but it seem to be working for other people.

can't do it on my lads PS2 as he doesn't have a hard drive in it should have realised really having done loads of xbox ones.

Why do you need hard drive? You can run all the software from memory card.

Anyone tried that? The SMS made my DVD-Divx player obsolete now

Need to figure out how to connect USB sat box to it and if it works then wooohooo!
