Hi, I came across this forum which talked me into buying a motor

Just had a quick question before I Install the motor (I have read other guides but still not sure). I am intending on setting it up tomorrow and My lat is 56N and Long is -4W. Does this mean if I set this motor to 32.2e then I would be correctly on the arc with 28.2 astra, I know i may have to adjust declination angle a little bit. The reason I want to use astra 28.2 is because it should be easier to find and I dont want to lose sky.

A very quick reply would be greatly appreciated along with any other tips.

Welcome to the forum sunnyZ1.

If you are using a motorised dish then you must forget about getting one satellite unless it is the one nearest to due south from your location.

The reason I say that is because you wil almost certainly fail to get the correct arc if you set up on one satellite any distance from due south.

If you follow the description posted by STICK then magically all of the other satellites should be easily foundprovided that you dont have a house or some other obstruction in the way.

If you do set up on 28.2 E, you will most certainly need to start from scratch at some point and re-set the dish.

If you put your co-ordinates and the satellite location into http://www.satlex.de/en/azel_calc.html
you will get the azimuth reading that you require, approx 37.2 degrees.

Hi, See this is what I dont get. Where did you calculate 37.2 when that site says 34.95 for those figures. I am sure I'm missing something but what. Still want to get it up today but time is running out. Ok lets say I.m setting up on a south satellite, what satellite should I use and what setting do I need on my motor for that satellite because I also heard that the satellite exactly south from you would be highest in arc for me in this case a satellite around 4 degrees.

Your nearest south sat is 5 degrees west.
satellite azimuth = 142.78 degrees (true north)
which equals 180 - 142.76 = 37.22 degrees east of south.
Did you use longitude 356 degrees east (for 4 degrees west)?

Hi again, Why does a 28.2 sat turn to 37.2 a difference of 9 degrees. Is it because true south is 9 degrees east for me and then how do you calculate true south. I assume then on motor I would set 37.2 degrees to locate astra 28.2. Is this right? Thanks for you info and putting up with me. The 34.95 was motor angle which site said which is different again.

The look angle to any satellite depends upon your location on the earth sphere. The location of the satellites, which are above the equator, are indicated as east or west of due south, the zero degrees meridian which passes through Greenwich/UK.
True north/south bears no resemblance to magnetic north/south which moves about. Magnetic north is somewhere in Canada at the present. If you look on an up to date Ordinance Survey map for your area it will have marked on it the magnetic deviation.
Just a little extra, the arc of the sun will pass behind the arc of the satellites in the next few days. Take a look at (wait whilst I find the link).
Damn, the link will not open, I will post it later or look for another sun outage calculator.
