This is a handy speed test site with a nice graphical interface.

http://www.speedtest.net

Ive just done a test and got 1917/379 (unusually slow for here - I normally get more along the lines of 2500/440)

3358 down, 487 up. Fairly typical here when it works.

Is that not the speed between your router and computer? The speed between your box and the local telephone exchange depends on how many are using it at the time, and how many are on the general internet - I think. I've had readings varying between 7.00 and 0.6 depending on the time of day and I'm supposed to be connected at 8 Mbps speed - but the icon always reads "100 Mbps" as that is the speed between my router and computer, connected by an ethernet cable as the wireless device within my computer is infrared, not radio (but still described as "wireless".

I have used "thinkbroadband" which will do a line speed test - it's quite interesting stuff and will show a graph of your continuing line sonnection speed.
