i guess i need to look for a particular transponder to find the channels listed on www.ftasat.co.uk, am i on the right satellite? :? if not which satellite do i need to line up on and which transponder?? or am i completely off target in my thinking ops:

also how do i find astra 2 a,b+d and astra 1b, my receiver does not list these in in drop down option list?

Check that your transponder list is up to date for 28.2E by comparing it to http://www.lyngsat.com/28east.html or somewhere similar, and then perform a complete rescan.

If you don't get everything listed at our sister site ftasat.co.uk then a dish & skew tweak as wod says should get you there. The FTA stuff is changing on a daily basis, so ftasat my not be bang up to date. It's just a rough guide.

also theres no astra 1b so forget that

as you have picked up some channels on astra 2 , check the transponder lists are correct and just do a final tweak of the dish

thanks chaps i think i am beginning to get there, although i still dont understand the acronyms :? have checked out lyngsat , generally the tps are the same as my scan, how do i update my transponders?

cannot get daylight time on the dish till the weekend but have signal strength 71%, qual 80% and ber 10-30%, are these good bad or indifferent?

any advice on reading material that would give a novice such as myself an insight into the basics and what the acronyms mean?

thanks for the help

It's easy for us to forget that acronyms can sometimes be far from obvious, so apologies for that.

If you're a bit lost, then you can be sure that others are too.

Check out our Glossary to pick up some technobabble. If you find it lacking in places, let us know and we'll either fill in the gaps or fix the glossary!

As far as your BER is concerned, it should be zero. It's the Bit Error Rate - the percentage of mathematical errors in the digital signal.

Check the manufacturer's site for a manual for you receiver. Instructions for how to update the transponder lists will be in there.

had a go today tweeking my dish but do not seem to be able to improve the signal, only seem to have made the ber worse ops:

having read other threads not sure if it is all me or the kit, on the glass half full basis i have had a relatively cheep as cheeps intro into the perils of fta and have learnt once again that we only get what we pay for. must save up for some decent kit. in the meantime i have something to learn on, bit like my 1962 mini when i was a teenager :'(

i cannot find in my instructions any way to update the transponder lists, (fortec star beta) what am i missing?

also would love directions to a guide to the acronyms, until one understands the words the language makes no sense!! :?

Did you not find our Glossary any good for the acronyms?

If not, post the ones that are causing you grief and I'll try and explain as best I can.

I'll also have a quick look for a manual for your STB and see if I can guide you to the right page.

OK, I found the English manual on the Fortec Star website here:

http://www.fortecstar.com/estore/sto...6&CategoryID=4

Now attached to this thread for posterity. Had to re-compress it with WinRar to get it under our 2Mb attachment limit, so you might find it easier to go to the Fortec site if you can't handle .rar files.

Section 4.3.7 TP Frequency at the bottom of page 24 tells you how to add a new TP (Transponder definition). It's not exactly easy to find, especially for a beginner.

Have fun

So it does ops:

It should have been http://www.satellitehelp.co.uk/porta...nt/view/18/28/

I'll modify the above so as not to confuse anyone else.

Apologies - I even copied it from the previous post without noticing it was incorrect! Doh!
