Hi all,

What is the difference between installing a firmware into flash memory and installing a firmware into multiboot
when you use Flashwizard Pro?

The flash memory is the fixed memory within the Dreambox. The image installed in flash memory controls the basic operation of the Dreambox operating system. ( Always do a flash erase after installing a new image in flash memory. That clears out all spurious code which will otherwise cause errors in dreambox operation. )

If you are also installing images on multiboot then it is a good idea to leave the flash image 'bare' and without satelites and emu's so that it does not get corrupted.

The image(s) on multiboot are the operational images that you can swap around and play with. You can put multiboot images on usb stick, compact flash card or hard drive. However it is not a good idea to put images on the hard drive because it means that the hard drive will be working its socks off.

Basically the difference is that if anything goes wrong installing into multiboot your box will still work and it wont affect the warranty

When installing an image into flash your guarantee magically disappears and if anything goes wrong when installing into flash your box becomes more useless than a Sky Digibox

Your best just to install your images onto a USB stick rather than into flash. You can as a stop gap install an image onto the Hard drive but its not recommended as your harddrive will be continuously running which will probably cause it to fail quite quickly

One other newbie question. When you down load an image onto your pc and you have transfered it to usb stick am I right in saying that you transfere it to the dreambox via the flashwizard pro from the pc or should I be downloading it from the usb port on the dreambox.

You put the USB stick into the Dreambox, then use Flashwizard pro to format it (from your PC - you'll need to enter the remote userid and password - root/dreambox - and IP address etc. in FWP setup screen).

Then tell Flashwizard where to find the downloaded firmware file on your PC, and then it will load it onto the USB stick.

If you have one of the DB's with a compact flash card slot get a Kingston 512mb compact card - thats plenty big enough for multiple images - Ive got about 6 on mine at the moment and its only half full.

It is starting to come together how the Dreambox works. However I cant help my self, I keep wanting to try this and that. Digging myself out of a hole means faster learning.
