Default ITV 'could have had Virgin rebrand'

ITV could have been rebranded as Virgin had NTL - now Virgin Media - been successful in merging with the broadcaster.

NTL proposed a merger with ITV last November, while the network was searching for a replacement chief executive. The proposal was ultimately rejected by ITV's board after Sky paid £940m for a 17.9% stake in the broadcaster.

Some hints as to what would have become of ITV after a merger with NTL were revealed during a presentation to analysts yesterday by Virgin Media CEO Steve Burch. Virgin Media, which is currently in discussions with ITV to acquire film and soap content for its on demand services, could have rebranded ITV with the Virgin name and used it to promote its pay television service. Burch added that Virgin is no longer interested in ITV at present beyond acquiring content rights.
