The first transmission from the BBC’s Broadcasting House, at Portland Place in central London, took place on 15 March 1932. To mark the occasion, the BBC website has published "In pictures: Broadcasting House at 75"
The organisation had begun a decade earlier, but by then it had outgrown its original premises off The Strand. The building - often referred to as "BH" by staff - was described as "the new Tower of London" by the Architectural Review. Sculptures by Eric Gill were commissioned to decorate the interior and exterior.
