Default Devolo offers home TV network via mains

German technology firm Devolo has demonstrated a home networking system that allows consumers to pipe digital TV around their homes using mains power sockets.

The Devolo adapter is connected to digital set-top boxes, and converts the TV signal into an internet protocol (IP) stream which can be networked within a 200m radius.

Devolo - which demonstrated the system at the CeBIT technology fair in Hanover - said its network-attached tuner provided "a simple means" of distributing a single digital satellite channel, in HD quality, throughout a home using the mains.

A specialist in 'HomePlus' networking solutions, Devolo is also developing similar adapters for digital terrestrial and digital cable.

It is Homeplug, not Homeplus
I've got three of Homeplugs (made by Solwise) in my network and it works well enough to stream video and music to Xbox and PS2.

It looks to be a straight combination of two existing devices. Might be interesting if it's cheap enough.

Apparently they work ok, although it has been reported that surge protectors have a tendency to bugger up the signal somewhat

SVP have been selling them for ages _http://svp.co.uk/products-list.php?cid=134

It is not that cheap because it is not commonly known technology. As everyone and their dog are using WiFi (or at least heard of it) Homeplug remain somewhat hidden from mainstream user. This technology is WAY easier to manage and use than WiFi. It is also more secure and stable. But... it never caught on.
As to pricing, there are a couple of devices on market. Cheapest kit cost something like 60 quid for 85Mbps (Turbo). There is also newer Homeplug AV standard, which is promising 200Mbps (yeah, right).
In addition, there are a couple of rival technologies such as UPA and BPL. The problem is that these might even not coexist on the same network not even to work together.... Pretty much like DVD+ and DVD- format war.

Surge protection does have tendency to kill Homeplug signal but only if you are plugging it in directly.

Yeah 200Mbits my @rse. But it has been proven to work at 95Mbits consistently, which is way better than Wi-Fi. Althought 802.11n threatens to change this with promised speeds of 480Mbits (YEAH RIGHT).

I have Gigabit Ethernet running around the home in full duplex (2,000Mbits).
