Default Finally installed Microsoft Vista

Finally installed Vista Ultimate on My Dell Dimension to replace XP Pro. First impressions are that it is clean and crisp and runs a lot better than the version of Longhorn i was playing with about six months ago

My PC doesn't respond as quickly as it did on XP but i'm putting that down to the fact i only have 512mb of memory installed, this will soon be rectified. I have had the usual runabout that i did when XP Pro was first released, looking for drivers and software that will run with the new operating system

Main problems were, well just about everything. Zone Alarm Pro doesn't work with it, neither did Bit Defender AV. Firefox also has the occasional hissyfit, well more than it did under XP anyway

I'm now running AVG antivirus for the meantime until I can buy a better AV soloution. PC Tools Firewall Plus replaced Zone Alarm and i must say for a piece of free software it is suprisingly effective, although i'm still not sure i want to let the PC into the DMZ just yet. I'm keeping it behind the router for now

Nero 7 also threw out its dummy and refused to run with Vista. A quick look at the Nero website saw me downloading the update and that to now works just as well as it did under XP

There are a lot of annoying things on Vista like giving new names to things in the control panel and putting them where you least expect to find them. The pics below show this.

There are a few nice touches though, Vista always checks with you before you delete, run or modify a program however i can see this getting annoying overtime. System is also better set out than before

I think they have basically tried to make it more soft and cuddley for new users. Its just found it annoying and quickly set out to make it run more like Windows 2000 by changing the menus. I just never managed to get used to that new fangled menu that they started using on XP. I've just switched it back to classic menu

Anyway its all i'm running for now although the XP Pro disk is sitting there should i need it. Now its just a case of testing out Vista and seeing what it can do.

Yeah, its not a bad OS. I've had it since the early stages - I have a TechNet subscription. Its not really worth the £130 asking price, and if I didn't have TechNet I would never have brought it.

You can stop the constant warnings in the control panel somewhere.

Lol, amazing system you've got there 'Unrated' :P

130 quid, Behave!!!!!! :roflmao:
I should also say Dreamview also doesn't work, although i was told to expect this from Jim.

Cute FTP loaded OK although i couldn't get the crack to work so i ended up going back to Flash FXP which is affective as Cute FTP although not IMHO as good.

I also couldn't find Telnet, although i suppose its in there somewhere. I ended up using PuttyTel which is just as effective

Most importantly FlashWizard Pro works fine. I have loaded a new image onto the USB stick on my Dreambox and it all works fine

@ Jontydog, it will run fine BUT you won't get Areo Glassy stuff. You'd just get the basics. & Media Centre wouldn't work.

@ Nano, did you buy the retail version or the OEM version?

Lol I was just wondering if you'd ripped yourself off. £130 for OEM and like £350 for Retails or £0 for the pirate bay lol

TechNet is about £220 a year, and for that I get loads of resources and 10 Licenses of every piece of Microsoft software.

If it ran any slower than it did on my Dell P4 2.4gig i really wouldn't bother.

I have now taken Vista off mt PC as there is very little software that will actually run correctly with it >

Firefox constantly crashes, as does Nero 7. My firewall changes its configurations when it feels like it, the last one stopping my e-mail software comunicating with my e-mail server, that was the final straw :'(

My biggest pet hate with it is that they have renamed stuff and moved it to a different place which really fu**s me off when i have to go hunting for it

Just reloaded ( my genuine copy of ) XP Pro back on to my PC and its running a lot faster and its a lot more stable and most of all all my software works on it.

Vista will not darken my PC again until it is proved reliable which will probably be just before the replacement for Vista comes out

Pity really because it looks really good on screen. Its just way to annoying for me to get on with :|

Time to start playing with Linux on dual boot again

At least you gave it a try Nano

Why can't they make something that is simple, reliable and does exactly what it say's on the tin :?

Maybe that's just to much to ask :
