Default PCI CI + CAMs

Lo all,

I have my system up and running now - pleased as punch I bought the TT S2-3200 and am waiting patiently in Windowsland until the Linux module & userland apps are working with S2 cards.... it'll probably be six months I'd have thought :/

So anyway, my only problem is I'd like Channels 4 & 5, which I assume means I need a CAM.

Ok and that brings me to my other "only problem", which is my pc only has two PCI slots - both of which I want to eventually be using with tuners.

So, if I bought a PCI CI board would it actually need to use the PCI connectors, or could I put it in a PCI express slot if I did some jiggery pokery? Looking at this [1] it looks like I could remove the bottom section. Also, I quite like the sound of the 3.5" CI bay, but haven't found one for my card yet. Are they worthwhile?

Advice and recommendations would be greatly appreciated - on CAMS as well while on the subject

Thanks,
Steve

I personally be worried now SKY Italia is rolling out NDS 3 to stop card sharing and CAM and Dreambox / Linux STB's card emulation.

Wouldnt be surpriced BSKYB pull something similar soon.

<edit - as with the above change it kinda didn't make any sense >

I'm not worried about Sky stuff - but would it affect Channel 4 & 5 too do you think?

I can't understand why they encrypt it in the first place; afterall, it's the same stuff as through freeview, and that has no encryption that I am aware of.

It wouldn't take long for someone to figure it out in my opinion. It may black screen us for a bit but i don't think it would be to long before it comes back on.

I'm sure i read something either here or on another forum saying the Italian government were going to force NDS to share details of their encryption system to allow viewing of Sky Italia on a non proprietary receiver with an official viewing card :?

No idea if its true but to be honest if it is as soon as the details are released it won't take long for someone to create an emulator for NDS. Its just going to be a matter of time IMHO

I don't think an Emulator would be that hard to make, after all sky publish the circuit diagrams for their digiboxes (or did I just walk on to a really dodgy site?) so its just a matter of cloning and adapting really...

If I were you, and I wanted guaranteed access to Channels 4 & 5, I would do one of the following:

1. Go see a black market sky hacking guru.
2. Buy a USB terrestrial receiver (about £20?) and use it until C4 & 5 become FTA ( There not atm because of licensing thingys)
3. Buy a USB/PCI freeview receiver, that way you get like 30 channels and get watch one record another stuff.
4. And I like this one, if you don't watch Channel 4 - you can get 5 on 16 East, and its FTA there.

Are you sure Gav? Its not been FTA (or in the Clear) on Eutelsat W2 @ 16°E since 30-08-2003.

It was first encrypted in RAS on 1-10-2003

Its now encrypted in PowerVu which is totally locked up and near impossible to open up with out a linked PowerVu receiver

Region 2B, 3B, 4B, & 5B are broadcast on 11680.00 V - 14466 3/4 from transponder D9 on the european beam in DVB-S

King of Sats is stating its FTA on 11634 V - 17578 5/6 although no other sat sites like Lyngsat or Flysat state this. :?

I definately cant get a lock onto that transponder. I'm guessing if it is there which i doubt, it will be a similar thing to Fox sports as there are analogue broadcasts from 19.2°e freq 11612 to 11656 which is more than likely crushing the signal :?

Can anybody else with a bigger dish than my 90cm one have a look at 11634 V, 17578 5/6 and get back to us

Nano

I get a good hit off that TP, but there ain't nothin' there but a load of data channels. Tried changing the properties to TV/video, but zip, nout, nada.

Channel 5 isn't FTA on 16E AFAIK, and NDS doesn't auto-update cards properly on any CAM anyway.

Forget Channel 4 and FIVE on a PC unless you're streaming/sharing.

If there is a new version of NDS destined for the UK, and it does knock-out emulators/CS, then I'm not at all sure we'll ever see another CAM/emulator for NDS, because the last one only ever saw the light of day because of a leak in the dev./testing team...

Thanks guys... that saves me some grief then, I will have to consider my terrestrial options I guess... prolly USB because of my PCI crisis.

Thank god Film 4 is FTA though - excellent channel.
