Pace Micro Technology, supplier of set-top boxes to 11 of the world's top 20 pay-TV operators, is marking the start of its 25th anniversary year with a web site looking at key events in the company's history.
Pace was founded by home computer entrepreneur David Hood in 1982, providing software products for Apple II machines, and operating from a terraced house in Bradford. The business grew rapidly to hardware such as modems and floppy disc drives before Pace—which had moved to Allerton—turned its attention to satellite TV receivers. Its first satellite set-top box was the SR640, launched in 1987. Soon Pace won orders to design and make satellite set-top boxes for customers all over Europe, and moved to its current HQ in Saltaire a year later. Since floating in 1996, Pace has pioneered digital satellite receivers and digital TV recorders, and the first low-cost digital terrestrial converters which helped create a market for Freeview in the UK. Hood remains a major shareholder in Pace and returns to the company each year to present its 'Hoodies' awards for innovation. Pace CEO Neil Ga'ydon said: "Whether its satellite, cable, terrestrial or IPTV technology, Pace has always led from the front and we are proud of what we have achieved." _________________________________________________ Cool. I was also writing software products for the Apple II in 1982 ![]()
