The Dreambox isn't impossible to get into from cold, but I think that there are better ways to start off.

I don't think that many people regret buying a 'starter' box, as the popular ones do resell well, so you don't really end up out of pocket if you choose to progress (and many don't).

Most satellite stuff is either bought off eBay or online retailers (mail order) - if you pick a reputable one, you shouldn't have a problem. Have a look at brymar.co.uk for a good selection of branded dishes. I rate the Triax TD88 as a starter dish.

If you want to sample plenty of stuff then a motorised dish is the way to go, but again, you can easily add a motor to a fixed dish later on.

Run your selection of kit past us before you buy if you're not confident

If you live in England you will need to know where South is, to discover this look for a Sky minidish, this will be pointing at 28.2E, so as you face the dish, looking at it, South will be 28.2 degrees to your left, this will help in siting your dish to get the most use from it, preferably so your dish has a clear line of site from 45E to 30W.
Most areas now allow you to have 2 dishes installed, and I believe you can have upto a 1 Metre dish installed without planning permission, but there might be local differences and problems with protected buildings.
Think about how much you want to spend and what you would like to receive, but once you start viewing other satellites you will want as much viewing choice as possible.
I live in the west midlands. I remembered that I have both a sky digital mini dish and a sky analogue dish. If the analogue dish could be recycled as a temporary solution that would be great. Although, eventually i would like a motorised wall dish so i can pickup everything

On the subject of where the dish should point are you saying that any new dish should be orientated the same as the sky mini dish? The analogue sky dish is pointing in the same direction, at least it seems so.

Thanks for the great advice so far

If your old dish is still on the wall it should be pointing at Astra 1, 19.2E, in which case if you just get a technomate receiver, patch it, and hook it up to the old dish you will receive a wide variety of channels.
You might need to also change the LNB, but you can check the dish, and LNB, by connecting it to your s*y box, and adding channels via your receivers menu.

Thanks Mickha.

This might be a really basic question but why on lyngsat is Astra 1 split up into Astra 1E,F,G,H,KR,G ?

Also, in theory would i be able to point my dish at any of the sats and get channels? For example, Türksat 1C,Arabsat 2B etc?

They are all the individual, distinct physical satellites in space at that orbital location, but as far as your receiver is concerned they are all logically combined into a single group which we often just refer to as 'Astra 1'.

Ah Ok.

So then when it also refers to hotbird 6,7,8 it still only one as far as the receiver is concerned.

Cheers.

If you want to keep the price down, then go for the TMS 1000D. It takes the same patches as the others, and is much cheaper.

OK, so it won't take a CAM or read a card, but not many people use them for that purpose anyway.

If you outgrow it, sell it and buy something else. Simple!

I forgot to mention, also check the c@ble on your larger dish, for signs of water ingress, as I don't assume it has been used in some time.
It might also have been moved, depending how well it was fitted originally, and how exposed to the weather it is, but if you're lucky you can just hook up a receiver and enjoy a world of new channels.
