Default Information Overload! Help for a Sat Noob Please

I feel a bit like a blonde asking, "Where do I put the oil?" at a petrol heads' convention but I'll fight through the blushes and ask my questions all the same.

My parents stay in a listed building which means self installation for a sat dish is out. There are two sat points, one in the bedroom and one in the lounge, which, according to the landlord will allow connection to Sky, but since it's only one feed per line, it will not allow Sky+ or SKY HD. I think I understand that part as I believe after doing a bit of background that both these services require two separate inputs to allow the recording bit (please feel free to contradict me if I'm wrong). Therefore my questions are:

what are the options I can get my mum and dad without lumbering them with hefty Sky subs;

does the fact that it's a shared fix dish preclude getting anything but Sky?

Thanks in advance if you can offer some advice

To be honest mate its extremely unlikely that you will be able to pick up anything other than Sky on the current setup unless you can find the dish and move it, although if its a sky minidish your options are limited

You are also correct on your asumption that you need two lines for sky+ to work

You may get away with mounting a dish on a floor mount away from the building and feeding a c@ble through a window or you may even get a dish to work behind a window which i have seen a few times.

You could even try a Digiglobe since the url i posted before i edited this didn't work. Goddamit

Thanks for the quick reply mate. They're on the 2nd floor so ground mount isn't an option. Just had a look at those dreambox thingies you suggest but I ain't really sure what option that gives? ops:

EDIT: Just done a search on Dreambox on here and read a whole load of stuff! Guess I should've done that before I asked. From what I read this seems to be a similar type thing to doing what I used to do with our ITV Digital box and an gold card programmer thing. Am I right or completely barking up the wrong tree? If this is inappropriate to talk about please mod me to death and accept my apologies

I think Nano was probably trying to direct you to one of these digiglobe things, but the link to it always seems to take you back to the home page at that URL.

Try this link instead:

There are also other weird and wonderful dish-alternatives, but none of them work that well.

It think that without a second dish, or being able to move the dish you have, you're stuck with Sky, or at least the 200 free channels that you can get from 28.2E

The Dreambox (like the Sky box) required 2 inputs for watch one, record another functionality.

I'm not sure if they pay for multiroom or not, but if one of the ports is unused, they could always run a cable from both the ports to the sky + box?
