Default local area connection lost

Howdy,
My pc keeps displaying "local area connection lost. A network cable has been removed" when I'm downloading or surfing.
If I'm watching something on youtube, the clip stops downloading for a few seconds then starts again.
It's getting quite annoying now. :spite:

I connect to the net using a router, which is cabled through an ethernet pci card. It's a wireless router and the laptop connects wirelessly. Not a problem with the laptop which suggests it's the settings on the main pc. :?
It happens when the lappy isn't even switched on, so I'm ruling out any probs from the lappy.
Any suggestions?
Regards

It could be the network card (could have developed a fault)or it could be the cable connections to the router.
Have you checked that the cable is not loose or damaged.

Yep, fiddled about with the cables to make sure they were properly inserted. They seem ok.
A wee indicater light is illuminated on the back of the card.

Do you have a second Ethernet controller on your motherboard? If so switch to that. If it still plays up, buy a new cable. If there is no second controller, buy a PCI network card, followed by a replacement cable if no-go.

You may find some helpful info in the Windows log-files. Check the Event-Viewer output.
