Cause of Signal Breakup

I am new to all this gadgetry. I have had a system installed to receive free to view on Optus B3. All is working great to my expectations, however!!!

What causes signal loss or interference. At times the picture suffers from heavy pixelation and break up with the sound making heavy cracks and squeals, only occasionaly.

At first I had it down to solar position because of regular time of day with the suns transit obviously changing daily. The other times could have been electrical storrms on line to sat.

If I know generally what the causes might be then I can more confidently live with the system. I got the hang of terrestial reception which I now use in Digital form and know what to expect.

Signal break up can be caused by many reasons,

Weak signal caused by
- too small a dish
- signal attentuation caused by rain or heavy clouds
- failing lnb
- poor quality c@ble.
- etc

If you are getting break up at the same time every day it may just be the satellite moving onto battery power during the eclipse season, or electronic interference kicking in from somewhere

The ancient & dilapidated B3 is due out of service later this year when D2 is launched.

You've lost me there m8 - you're obviously a lot older than me

Extreme solar activity can take down satellite operation, but it would all be a bit more serious than the standard sort of picture break-up you're experiencing.

Other than what Analoguesat has mentioned, a slight re-alignment of your dish might improve things.

Thanks for the replies. I'm south coast NSW Aus. All the gear is new STRONG reciever 85 cm dish (not getting on roof to identify lnb) cable asinstaled by competent technician, alingnment by him with big box of tricks, signal detector, quad shield cable. Everything is acceptable, just the odd dropout. Yur responce helps me monitor the outcome in future.

What happens when the B3 satellite expires, do you need a realignment and tuning to the replacement D2. How is notification made or do I just check detail on the lyngsat site.

D2 will probably go into the same orbital slot as B3 which will mean there is no need for any reallignment

Its a bit like Hotbird 8 and Hotbird 2. When Hottie 2 suffered a power problem due a solar flare fallout. The transmissions were transferred on the night of March 14 from HOT BIRD™ 2 to HOTBIRD™ 8

The only thing that was noticible was the signal on 12015 that carried "Art" suddenly got stronger during the night.

That transponder had always been weak on Hottie 2 for some reason. As both birds were at the same orbital slot there was no need for any adjustment of any dishes at all. It will be the same sort of thing on B3 and D2
