Default Fortec and Mini dish

I have been given a ex sky mini dish with a digital lnb attached , and seen a FTA receiver in Maplins for £40.Fortec.
Do I have to get a new Dish and lnb, because the minidish is Sky only or should the two together speak to each other to provide me with additional entertainment in the bolt hole (Workshop).Manythanks.

The dish wil work fine with any fta receiver. It will be a bit small for the more exotic satellites, but you should be ok on the main 3 clusters (apart from possibly during heavy rain)

A dish is a dish - it collects & focusses microwave radiation from on high, theres nothing magical about sky dishes

I would consider looking at a Technomate receiver as their is much more support available for them.

I'm not knocking the FortecStar stuff as i only recently parted with my Lifetime Classic receiver, it was fantastic for setting up with and also for FTA stuff but unfortunately most of the unofficial patches dried up so it wasn't much use to me anymore.

Check the Al7Bar site before you buy a Fortec. You will soon see if there are still patches available for it

Get a technomate 1000 or another box that has support like echolink/wiztech. These boxes can be had for around £50 + pp but hold there value on the second hand market. A good satellite to point your dish at would be 19.2e (Astra 1)

Thankyou ,one and all for the valued support- I will let you know how I get on and which receiver I have got ,and the success .
Didn't know there was digital FTA on 19 degrees ,be great to have a look then, thought it would have to be 28 degrees etc.
Cheers

If you want "normal" channels like itv & bbc, film 4 etc then point the dish at 28.2 if you get a box that can be patched which means connecting the satellite box to the pc and putting some different software on it. The guys on this forums will help you out with that. Then point the satellite at 19.2 you can view some really good stuff atm. Films in english, premeirship football, and naughty stuff. The FTA stuff isn't bad on that satellite. If your sticking with the fortec then I would go for 28.2 (depending on if you can patch it) but you won't get channel 4 or 5 stuff but you will get film 4.
