Heres a bit of history - the transmission footprints for Astra 1K (lost after a botched launch in November 2002). The maps disappeared off the SES web site very fast after the mishap - not before I had grabbed them though!

Notice the non overlapping spot beams in the second picture - and frequency reuse between the beams would have denied reception of anything on the other beam if you lived under one of them....

And look what Ive just run across - the Alcatel pdf document all about Astra 1K!
