Default do i need a priest ?

Hello, I have something very weird going on with my installation. I have sky HD, but this was happening with my sky plus box before. A various times of day, particularly late at night and first thing in the morning the systems seems to get a life of its own, it scrolls through menus over rides the station i want to watch, sometimes records random channels goes up and down, up and down the menu screens, its driving me mad.

Things I have tried, isolating the sky box from external feeds, even covered it in tin foil in case it was getting a signal from some random neighbour, i rang sky they sent an engineer who claimed to do a software up grade " to cure it " and said if it didn't i should do another upgrade, by turning the box off and turning it on with some button pushed - but i forgot what sequence he said so cant try that ( anyone know?) My family think I am haunted and that there are ghosts over riding the remote! ( new batteries so it isn't that)

Has anyone seen or heard of this weirdness before, or got any ideas preferably short of calling the local exorcist, to help

thanks

Sounds very bizarre to me. It has been heard of in the past for cordless phones to cause problems with STB's.

(STB = Set top box)

It could also just be one of those dodgy boxes that got through their so called testing procedures

If you still intend to use it i suggest taking it to a proper satellite STB repairer to have it checked out. Its pointless getting a so called Sky engineer to look at it as most of them don't know their arse from their elbow let alone know how to fix a STB.

They just follow procedures that are in a book which usually ends with " If you can't fix the STB charge customer for Re-conditioned box i happen to have in the back of the van" because i'm too thick to figure out exactly what is wrong with it

That's very cynical nano, even if it is true.

Sahpub, have you gone into the recorder menues to make sure there are not any requests for repeat recordings?

Also, do you have it connected to a dvd recorder that has any repeat recording entries, so asking the receiver to change channels?

If the same thing was happening with your Sky + box, then you can almost certainly rule the hardware out. I take it that you changed remote when you switched boxes?

It's surely interference of some sort. I think I would focus on the times it happens. What time do your neighbours come home and leave for work? Can you hear a TV when you switch yours off?

Are there any transmitting masts nearby? CB or HAM radio? Emergency services?

This thread will help you with a forced firmware upgrade.

Thanks Nano, I don't have a cordless phone but who knows an insomniac neighbour! In fact i have systematically turned every RF device in the house off to try and isolate it to no avail. I am pretty sure it is environmental not STB ( unless there is a general susceptibility to the phenomenon )

Thanks everyone, I think I am left feeling its either aliens, errant neighbours with bizare unshielded RF ( although i had assumed that it was IR not RF that the remote controls used ), the navy, army, airforce or un-named govt agencies, and maybe lastly just the ghost the throws the stuf around the kitchen having a laugh.

lol try the forced software download again, its the backup button on the receiver you hold down when you plug it back it till a screen pops up telling you its downloading any new software

have you tried unplugging the rf leads if connected and see if anything like that makes a difference ?
