Default Gemini 3.5 crashing?

Howdy.
Running multi boot in flash and Gemini 3.5 from Usb stick.
Crashed a few times lately, and won't boot up. :?
Leave it for a day and boots up no problem and all ok.
Buggered about with other images and no problems. :spite:
Wondered if anyone else had same probs?

Installed 3.50 only today. Boxman in flash, and I get the odd lockup too. Going to try a different image in flash tomorrow to try and cure it.

Mine always reboots OK, it just grinds to a halt if I keep switching CAMs etc.

Never had a problem when switching between cam's, stick. :?
Seems when I switch the box off using the remote, when I try and switch on later, the box freezes and the wee world on the display stops spinning?
Left it in that state for 20 mins once and it just stuck there.
Doesn't happen all the time, and left for 24 hours, works ok.
A bit confusing.

I have several CAMs loaded (5 or 6), and if I've had them all running in quick succession, as well as a few scripts and whatnot, I think the internal memory gets a bit cream-crackered.

Sounds like there's something not quite right with yours. What do you have in flash?

If it's slightly older, a more recent image may well solve your problems. Gemini 3.5 requires some more recent core components I think.

I've got DM7000 Flash Image 2.6.9 in flash.
I thought that was a a Multiboot image. Not 100% sure though. Seems to work most of the time but a bit too techy on the software side of things for me.

OK, basically, the Linux images are made up out of let's say 50 components. Each of those evolves over time, and at any given point in time, a collection of those 50 components gets assembled into an image.

In a few months time, some of those components will have moved on, so the next collection that goes into an image will form a different mix, some old and some new, and so it goes on.

With the multiboot scenario, the Dreambox actually starts to boot off of the image in flash made up of the 50 components assembled as of January.

Half way through the boot, the multiboot manager steps in, and says, hold-on, lets load the second half of the image from Gemini on the USB stick.

Now, if Gemini was assembled around March time, it's set of 50 components will vary slightly from those incorporated in the January flash image.

I hope you can see that such a mismatched pair of images can give rise to more problems (or at least more likelihood of problems) than images more closely matched.

Each image usually gives details of what it was based on in the readme, so it makes sense to put something that looks very similar to that in the flash memory.

That's a very simplistic view of the thing, but hopefully will give you a feel for why it's important to try and keep everything in synch. It's not hyper-critical - just a sensible move.

Hi Barr, if you have a dreambox image on flash it is a very old one unless you have paid for a new image.

First, did you flash erase after installing the flash image? Second, have you relocated var onto the usb memory? Both are very important.

I would strongly recommend putting erase.img on flash using Dreamup and a serial cable. Then install the EDG perfectflash dual boot image on flash and finally flash erase. Dont bother installing any satellites or emus on flash.

Put any working image you prefer on usb stick using Flashwizard 6.3 and install all satellite settings and preferred options. Then add any other images you like to the usb stick using Flashwizard and with the copy settings boxes ticked.

You could try putting a swap file on the usb or cf card if you have one - if a computer runs out of memory strange things start to happen. My 7020 has stablised somewhat since Ive started setting up a 16 MB swapfile.

Ok, I think i've got some sort of understanding of how the linux systems evolve ( I've read a few pages of a linux based college course). Not an expert though obviously.

Jim, I just used what was available at a.l.s.a.t and satan-dream and i-h-a-d for messing about with images. Not particularly understanding what I was doing, I managed to get it to work on Gemini (apart from vplug for TPS).

I just loaded Gemini 3.5 because it was an update really.
I'm sure Flashwizard did all the flash erase stuff for me. Can't remember though.
Don't want to pay for images and the like if i don't have to (at the moment).

AS, I put a swap file on the USB stick, after reading something about it somewhere.

I usually use CCcam1.7.1 as it's the least hassle free for me.
