By way of an update I have got an email back from technoworld <snip> informing me that I should have taken out a dead pixel guarantee costing £34 when I bought it!
Thanks for mentioning the site. Now I know what shop to avoid!

oooeerrr! Had I have seen those Jim I wouldn't have. They weren't even hugely cheaper - about ten quid.. I wonder if they are aware? Maybe I'll send them a link.. They have responded yet again and told me to ring Acer - passing the buck. Not expecting a quick call but will keep you posted..

Have spoken to Acer. Contrary to what Technocrap said, and also to their own blurb their dead pixel policy is 4 per million unless there is one in an imaginary box in the middle of the screen. Don't know if they mean dead & coloured or just dead in anyway. You decide..

TFT LCD INSPECTION SPECIFICATION
The Limited Warranty does not extend to minor defects of LCD displays
occurring in Products equipped with LCD display technology provided that
there shall not be more than four (4) defective pixels per million pixels on
a given LCD Display, and provided further that, if the display panel is divided into
nine (9) equal rectangular areas, there shall be one defective pixel in the central area
of the display.
The green Area in the middle is the
central area of the display with no more
then one defective pixel.
Resolution / overall pixel
640 X 480 X 3 = 921,600
800 X 600 X 3 = 1,440,000
1,024 X 768 X 3 = 2,359,296
1,280 X 1,024 X 3 = 3,932,160
1,400 X 1,050 X 3 = 4,410,000

Where the hell does the x 3 bit come from? Should the screen be 3 dimensional?
Might have to ring them back when I have more time to argue the toss..

Is a pixel not a pixel regardless of colour? The screen resolution is 1280 x 800. The colour of a pixel is determined by voltage isn't it? There aren't 3 different coloured pixelets that rotate around in the same pixel space according to what windows tells it? If a pixel is dead, it's dead no matter what colour it is, was or can't be. Does this make any sense :?
Ma, get the gun!

The 'pixel' in LCD panel consisting of 3 sub-pixels (red, green and blue), just like in CRTs, AFAIK. But Windows doesn't know about it (again, just like in CRTs) and can't report it to user.

A pixel is an address. Each address has three colour elements which are mixed and matched to give the wanted hue.

Hence a digital panel has 1024 x 720 or whatever addresses as pixels but 1024 x 720 x 3 colour options. If the panel has a faulty pixel it usually results in a black spot or a 'dead pixel'. It can also be faulty due to one of the colours red, green or blue not functioning and so producing a wrong colour or even white.

So the 2 bright Blue bas***ds I mentioned at the start of this are sub pixels. Dead tho. Reading the link to the ISO standard earlier it would seem I have 4 dead pixels, because they are coloured. However they are not in an imaginary box, not in the middle and by all accounts not under any sort of warranty.. Arse! TBF the missus has not yet noticed / complained about them so maybe I'll just shuttup and forget about it.. I'm not totally nieve but i think it might be a little fairer if the manufacturers warned that there may be dead pixels and that they are not covered - sales might drop off a bit if they did..
Worries me slightly that Technomate offer a dead pixel insurance.. If Acer don't take them back what do they do with the returns. Oh, I know, they sell them all to people like me that don't know about or want to shell out £40 for the insurance.. Lesson learnt I think..
