Default Dead Pixels..

I know this argument has been done time and time before but how the hell are dead pixels on a brand new laptop screen NOT a fault? Apparently you need 8 of the bright blue bas**rds or 1 dead centre before it's a fault. Going on a crusade with Acer now... May be some time... Anyone had issues, with who, and what was the outcome? Looking for ammo

It depends on which standard they conform to, there are three different ones - I can't remember of hand, but one standard is perfect for life (very rare + expensive), the normal one which is a allowed a few, and the worst one which is loads before it even because a fault. :P

Where does it say this? I don't see in big letters on the box that your screen may be polluted by blue dots, but this is not a fault.. Maybe it's a new feature of Vista's aero desktop! Nothing back from the Acer camp yet and the place I bought it from aren't interested. Crusade to be continued..

Is the product accompanied by any logo's or stamps to say what standards it conforms to?

Just wondering - not that I disagree with you on this one. I think it's crap too!

surely you can try sending it back on the distance selling legislation - there is a cooling off period and also I just found this:

http://www.oft.gov.uk/advice_and_res...lation-periods

From the link:

Quote:
The regulations give consumers an unconditional right to cancel an order. This is to allow the consumer the opportunity to examine the goods or consider the nature of a service.

If a consumer cancels an order, written notice must be given to you (I believe this is referring to the seller) by:

* goods – seven working days from the day after that on which the goods are received by the consumer;
* services – seven working days from the day after that on which the consumer agrees to go ahead with the contract.

I believe that the seller can refuse to accept returns under the distance selling regulations if the package has been opened - which is pretty stupid. I think this is with things like software, DVD's CD's etc. in mind, but there isn't a clear distinction in the regs, as it obviously covers all types of goods.

At the end of the day, if you cause merry hell and promise to keep them tied up with paperwork and hit them with bad publicity, then you should get a result.

The distance-selling tactic is a good starting point, then un-merchantable quality, and then buying the domain name acersucks.com

The Class II (most consumers LCDs) allows several dead pixels per panel.
Here is some information about it: http://www.tomshardware.com/2003/03/...lty/page7.html

An interesting read - thanks for that. After reading the blurb that came with the laptop it doesn't say what iso standard it conforms to. It does say up to 4 dead pixels are allowed but according to Toms hardware that standard doesn't exist. Have emailed the (un) helpful chap at the returns dept and am awaiting a reply.. The distance selling thing is probably a non starter as we have had it over 2 weeks, although I don't remember seeing anything about returning it in the paperwork. No doubt we would have to pay postage and some sort of re-stocking fee as well, which I am not prepared to do as I think it should be replaced gratis.. Next step is probably to approach Acer themselves.
Stick, have checked, and that domain is already taken

By way of an update I have got an email back from technoworld - Am I allowed to mention the site? - informing me that I should have taken out a dead pixel guarantee costing £34 when I bought it! They will replace it for £40 + vat but don't mention whether the new one will be free of dead pixels. I am awaiting a reply from Acer to see which ISO standard the screen conforms to as it doesn't mention any standards in the documentation or on Acers site. Also learnt that the distance selling act does not apply to business customers.. Is that right? It's not looking to promising at the mo so may have to manufacture a more serious fault with unit Anyone got a micro soldering iron :spite:

Yes, that's true. I had to look into this at some length last year regarding a faulty dehumidifier.

The regulations are called "The Consumer Protection (Distance Selling) Regulations 2000."

http://www.oft.gov.uk/advice_and_res...g-regulations/

Quote:

Consumer - Definition

Someone who buys goods in a personal capacity from a business seller.
