I believe it's only a trial from June anyway - doesn't it start proper in September?

Yes, that's my understanding as well - a trial until September.

OK, then... Since French TV is the driver here, I'll just wait to see how the situation evolves...

Proper BBCFreesat will launch next year. Nothing planned for Italy that Ive heard.

Nothing - apart from "Freesat" is run by Sky - who have no interest in selling non subscription services & do their best to push pay telly instead ??
