Default Scots switching on to ADSL

Consumers in Scotland are switching over to ADSL broadband faster than any other parts of the UK, according to new figures from incumbent telco BT.

Aberdeenshire and Shetland have become the first areas in the UK to have more than half of their homes and businesses hooked up ADSL.

But Scotland dominates BT Wholesale's top ten league table of ADSL broadband take up in counties around the UK. Aberdeenshire takes the top slot with a 50.9 per cent adoption rate, followed closely by Shetland with 50.7 per cent.

Third and fourth place are taken by Stirling and Aberdeen, while Moray completes the all-Scottish top five with 47.9 per cent.

The Welsh local authority of Monmouthshire comes sixth with 47.5 per cent, while the UK finally makes an appearance in seventh place with 46.8 per cent adoption.

The Scottish national average for ADSL is 33.3 per cent, ahead of the UK average of 31.2 per cent.

Brendan Dick, BT Scotland director, said: "These areas have consistently been among the leaders in the UK for broadband adoption, which emphasises the innovative nature of their people and businesses.

"Fast internet access is now making a huge contribution to the economic success of Scotland, as businesses find new markets and work more efficiently, and households capitalise on the almost limitless abilities of the internet for education, entertainment and shopping."

BT now has 855,000 wholesale broadband connections in Scotland and more than 10.9 million across the UK.

Well, STICK, in Scotland we use the running water to make electricity because we get about 9 months less summer than you do so there's plenty of the running water. Having said that, on June 21st it will be light until about 11.00 p.m. but midsummer's solstice is usually pi**ing wet and we have the lights on by 8.00 p.m. - and that's only in Paisley!!

I think it is related to the skylark, but it has a wide stripe running from head to tail.

Apparently becoming more popular in Scotland!

Don't care much for the skylark. Think Rupert is behind it.

I'll have a wee nibble if you don't mind, and any more of your cheek and we'll turn off the tap that supplies you with Leccy and water.

You see, we use our surplus water to make the "Water of Life" - whisky. N.B. Spelt WITHOUT an "e" which refers, of course, to Irish whiskey. Then we pour a generous dram (a Scottish measure used to describe anything between a nip and half a glass or more (depending on the generosity of your host) and put a little water in it - nectar!! You can go through this ritual as many times as you like before you fall down and the peak of this activity usually happens around January the 1st, EVERY year!!

You take the whisky round all your friends on January 1st - this is known as "first footing" as yours is the first foot through the door (if it happens to be open at the time and if it's closed and there's only a a cat flap and the cat happens to be coming out at the time then it could be a bit unfortunate) on New Year's Day.

Why do you think the there are TWO days of public holiday at the beginnning of the year?

Yep, I'll have a chunk.
Most stuff that is really useful have been of Scottish origin.
Telephone- Alexander Graham Bell
Television - John Logie Baird
Education system - available to all
Tarmac - mac says it all
Football - Document discovered last year concerning the origins of football - Scotland
Mackintosh - useful if your up a ladder in the rain
Whisky - no explanation needed (hangover causer)
Irn Bru - hangover cure
water - loads of it (to put in the whisky)
Friendly banter - loads of it (useful if your drinking whisky)
Rabbie burns - poetry about real living (again useful if your drinking whisky)
Oil - England hasnae goat much except for a few wee isolated spots, we had loads and used it to benefit all UK
Nuff said.
