i am uncertain what people mean by downloading, do they download to a card or do they download to a receiver????

What do you mean by downloading?
Have you never downloaded from the internet? By accepting something from a site on the net to transfer on to your pc (a program or a music file).
Same thing concerning receiver or card.
Transferring of information.

i know how to download things, i just need to know how you transfer things to receiver and what benefits i would get from doing so???

What type of receiver do you have?
Can you connect to it from your pc?
Where is your satellite dish pointed?
Good place to start

i have just ordered a echostar 1200 my dish at the moment is pointing 28e and i don't know if i can connect it to the pc what cable would i need to do this

A 'patch' (this IS what your talking about) is something that allows you to view channels without paying (none of us here do it

There is NOTHING at 28 East.

What you'd do is hook up your receiver and patch it, allowing these channels.

I'm not familiar with the echostar receiver and whether it's patchable or not. Big apologies

If your dish is pointed at 28.2 E then it's probably only sly free to air that's available.

If you can move it, then there may be lots more to see.

I'm sure one of the mods will be along in a moment to enlighten you with what's available.

I'd have a look in the echostar section in the main page to give you an idea of what your receiver will get.

Patching is loading unofficial modified software onto a receiver which will open some extra channels.

Mickha is correct.

Your box comes with 'firmware' installed onto it (much like Windows on a PC), by 'patching' it, you are altering this firmware to allow the free viewing of channels (Mostly foreign).

Sky TV and its encryption system (NDS) is un-hackable.

There are many foreign TV packages (like Sky in the country) that can be had, such as

Premiere
Canal +
Digital +
