Once upon a time, on a balmy summer's day, there was a grand daddy of a trout just basking in the warmth of the shallows by the edge of the pond. It had its eye on a fly that was hovering just out of reach, and was waiting for it to descend a little, at which time it would jump out of the water and snaffle the fly.

Unbeknownst to the trout, there was a bear, hiding behind a tree on the trout's blind side, thinking "If that fly descends a little, the trout will jump out to catch it, and I'll quick as a flash nip out from behind the tree and bag myself a trout for lunch."

Unbeknownst to the bear, there was a hunter, loaded for bear, hiding behind a bush, thinking "If that fly goes a little lower, the trout will come out to catch it, the bear will come out of hiding to catch the trout, and I'll have a clear shot at the bear."

Near the hunter, a cat was greedily eyeing the hunter's sandwich which we was about to start munching on. The cat was thinking "If the fly would only lose a bit of height, the trout would jump for it, the bear would jump for the trout, the hunter would raise his rifle to get the bear, and he would drop his sandwich to free his hand, then I could grab the sandwich."

And lo, in some mysterious way known only to those who write these proverbs, the fly dropped down just enough, the trout jumped out of the water, the bear streaked out from behind the tree, the hunter raised his rifle and dropped his sandwich, the cat jumped to get the sandwich as it was falling.....

....missed, and landed in the water.

And the proverb?

Every time a fly drops three inches, some poor pussy is going to get wet.
