There are many different encryption systems employed by the different providers operating from Hotbird. Not too much is open to the hobbyist at the moment, the notable exception being TPS on some receivers. There are probably a few other channels too.

If you tell us which particular provider or channel(s) you're interested in, we'll tell you why you can't have it! :'(

A subscription card will be required to open the remainder at the moment.

Does your receiver have a CAM slot? Are you particularly attracted to Hotbird for some other reason? There are other satellites with more open right now.

I have checked the Echostar web site and all I could find, on the Echostar 1200, was that it has an embedded Viaccess and a card slot, no CI (Common Interface) slots so it can't take a cam like the Diablo or Dragon, and I can't find any information on patches.
Hopefully someone can provide more information on this receiver but it doesn't look good for veiwing many encrypted channels.
How old is this receiver and where/when did you purchase it?
