So Stick - do we have a "killer app" here with remote monitoring??

Ok so we had a bit of fun with me setting the camera up pointing at our bird table, but I can think of quite a few ways of utilising a tv placeshift system with remote monitoring capabilities.

Killer app?

I suppose it depends on your definition. I think to qualify for a killer, it has to have extremely wide-spread appeal, which this doesn't. Combine it with the streaming TV, and it's getting warmer.

I love this technology. I've always thought it would be cool to be able to do this, and I think this is a really neat implementation. I'm tempted to say that it's the big new thing, but it's all arse-about-face.

Unless you are away from home with something to install a client on and with a broadband connection, it's limited. If you want or need remote monitoring, it's great. The best bit is that it's a one-off payment for your slingbox and camera as opposed to most other solutions which require an ongoing subscription to a hosting provider. Remote monitoring is quite a niche market though.

When I can install the client-end either in or under my own TV then it becomes killer.

What this needs is the other half to make it complete. Either that, or combine both 'send' and 'receive' functions into a single box. If you could dynamically pair these boxes to any other, it would be superb.

Not quite peer to peer, but you get my drift. This won't happen, I'm sure - because content providers will get a sniff and be able to claim at least the potential for copyright infringement.
