Can anyone advise on a good (but cheap) receiver. I dont wanna get a motorised system yet, beleive it or not at present I prefer twidling with my dish by hand
. But do I need a receiver with more than one cardslot and do I need any special connections. As I live in Swansea which is in South Wales am I right in assuming that the majority of the satellites are at the horizon.

Hi gizouk,
there are too many different types of receivers available now to give a simple answer to that question, but there are a few popular models you can look at: Technomate range: Technomate 1000, you can pick one up for around £60, at present there is a lot of support for these receivers and they can open a few packages, giving lots of viewing options, try getting one with a CI slot, common interface, to accept a CAM, like the Diablo, and card slot. Technomate 1500+, same as above, £90-£100, maybe cheaper, has card slot and 2 CI slots. Technomate 9100, a Linux based receiver, and at the moment at a very impressive price of £109, this is similar to a dreambox, but a lot cheaper. These machines can do a lot, including take a hard drive to record programmes, there will be a lot of images to flash on these boxes, in the near future, but will take a little research, and work, to get the most out of it. Vantage, opening more than most receivers, at the moment, and highly recommended by satsid. If you have a read through the various receivers sections you can then get an idea of kind of receiver you would like, then post back with more specific questions, and please include a budget and more information on your dish, which will affect what satellites you are capable of currently receiving. Best wishes Mickha |

Your satellites will be in much the same position in the sky as they are for anyone else in the UK - have a look at some of the arc diagrams in our utilities section.
If you can give us a good idea of what you regard as important in a receiver - what sort of things you want to watch - whether you want to unlock payTV by dodgy means or by paying a subscription etc. It would also help if we had an idea on price too. The very cheapest boxes are the old analogue ones - they're basically free. Then there are limited 'B' grade receivers or old stock from the high street stores, better quality stuff second-hand in the local paper or on eBay etc. (around the £30 - £40 mark). Patchable new FTA boxes start at around £60 - and those with slots around £90. Better quality boxes start at around £140, and the flashy boxes can range from maybe £150 to over £500. Ah, I see Mickha has managed to overtake me ![]() Hell, I'll post it anyway

oops sorry
ops: Well I'm looking at about £100 - £200 so I could probably get a Dogs Dangly receiver then.Thinking hard bout it I may be better getting a motorised system as well. So I think a little more saving may be needed here do you think £500 in total would be enough?

Hi Sid,
This vantage receiver is this the one you pay about £199 for the combo system, that has a universal LNB. Also this is open to everyone. I'm hearing a lot of universal LNB. What other types of LNB are there? Cheers BGonaSTICK i found the satellite arc. I didnt realise there was so many up there ![]() With regards to you query as to what I want to do, unlock ppv's etc well the answer to that is IO would like to unlock them but I dont want anybody from the ministry of silly walks knocking on my door say "your nicked me beuty"
