Hi
I am thinking of getting a DVD recorder to replace the VCR. but as we have a huge collection of tapes I was wondering about a combined DVD/VCR recorder. Can you record from a tape on to a DVD with these? Or would I be better off just getting a DVD recorder and connecting it to our VCR which is a very high quality 6 head unit?

I would recommend the latter but you really need a hard drive dvd recorder so that you can do some editing of your videos before burning to DVD.

If you have perfect vhs tapes or perfect recordings from a transmission then nothing. Unfortunately I find recordings are never quite right so I like to delete the wrong bits before burning to dvd.
I also find that I dont want all recodings saved to dvd so I watch them from hard drive and only save the recordings to dvd that I actually want.

I have just read a post by a guy who repairs DVD/HD recorders, and he didn't have a good word to say about S*msung recorders. He said their Blu Ray recorder had the same design faults as their problematic DVD recorder. The engineer's opinion is more valid than the salesman's

Can't beat the Panasonic VHS/DVD combo IMHO. My sister has one and it works flawlessly
![]() Avoid the likes of your Pacific, Dual or Onn rubbish from the supermarkets they are more trouble than they are worth. Daewoo recorders are cr@p aswell. I purchased one and got my money back after the 3rd replacement unit ![]() Gone back to using my old trusty Philips DVD/VHS Combi unit, OK you cant record DVDs on it but then again i have my Dreambox HDD and PC for that ![]() ![]() Nano

Nano, the trouble with the Dreambox is that whilst you can play vhs tapes through it via the scart connection, you cant record a vhs input to HDD so you cant do anything with the vhs stream.
I have asked some of the image people if the recording facility can be made operational whilst the vhs input is operating but no luck so far.

I have a Toshiba DVD HDD recorder and that has operated faultlessly for the last two years.
I also have a Samsung dvd/vhs combo which has worked without fault for about the same time. I put the ouput from the Samsung to the Toshiba for recoding and dvd editing/burning. Unfortunately the DVD burner is not so good for editing. That is why I would like to stream it via the dreambox to the PC so I can use the better editing facilities.
