If your going to spend £100 - £200 i don't think you can go wrong with one of the Linux based receivers like the Dreambox or Technomate TM 9100

They're a bit of a nightmare to figure out how to set them up but to be honest they're more or less future proof and there's loads of support for them

The only downfall of the Dreambox is that its a waste of time for doing blind scanning but great for almost everything else

Nano, you say add another lnb...can you buy a dish set up where you don't have to add anything as they're already there...ie multi lnb's
Yes mate its called a Force Frontier (pictured below) and Sids your man to ask again as he's got a dish like one of those as well 8) The only problem with that is that most receivers are only capable of switching between 4 lnbs and no more. The other alternative is to motorise

wouldn't expect to pay just £100 for the lot and get anything too good
On the contrary its near enough what i started with other than i had a Technomate TMS 1500CI+ instead of the TM 1000D. I could get the same as everyone else with that setup with the exception of those who had paid out for extra cams or cards.

For a budget dish the Global Orbit 80R is very good value for money, i thought it was so good i purchased the Global Orbit 90R when i decided to get a bigger dish. I have managed to get some of the vertical transponders off Nilesal 7W with it which is not an easy thing to do in England

Just because its cheaper than some of the bigger brands it doesn't necessarily mean its no good

80cm Global Orbit 80R dish, Inverto or any other good branded 0.2dB lnb, Technomate 1000D sat receiver. Probably around the £100 mark for this lot not including postage. This receiver is also able to open up some encrypted services once it has been patched with unofficial firmware

The 80 cm dish guarentees a good signal from Hispasat @ 30w or Astra 1 @ 19.2e where most of the spanish stuff is and it allows you to add a second lnb for 13e if you decide to line the dish up for 19.2e.

TPS (France) which has a lot of English language content is wide open on 13e at the moment.

Does it make a difference if my TV only has one scart connection?

Plug your DVD player into the VCR socket of the sat receiver and it should relay the signal to the TV when the receiver is in standby mode ( it works like that on my Technomate 1000 anyway) , or you can connect the receiver up through the RF (Aerial) input on the TV

I'm located on the Wirral (Merseyside) - You will be able to get most things with the 80cm dish

Thanks Nano...although I did mean £100 to £200 for the receiver alone...wouldn't expect to pay just £100 for the lot and get anything too good

Also thinking of 'motorized' dish?

Frank
Hi frank, now on a dish size.If you want satellite feeds dont go under a meter in size. Most people are happy with a meter dish, for the price diff 2 a 80cm dish,is that you wont see fedds from a 80cm. The first rule in satellite is your dish, many guys over the years have bought a 80cm & moved up to a meter in size. This is a rough guide for the uk.I look forward to hereing how you get on,once you have made up your mind what you by.come back & give us some reports once your set up.good luck.

Not at all. You are allowed upto 1m under current planning regulations

Hi frank with a meter dish you be ok & safe planning permission is not needed here.over that it will be,here is some thing a lot dont know.If you have a dish over planning permission size & its been up 3 years.Thay can not make you take it down.Today thay seem to be not so hard on dishes as once was,you can have more than one dish now 2.If it was me setting up today i would add a twin lnb, this is why. Most guys add SKY2 CARD from there pc,this will save you re bying another lnb. This is the cheepest way to watch feeds in 4.2.2

Lets also point out that although regulations in England were loosened recently, for folks living in conservation zones and other restricted areas there are still restrictions on dish sizes and siting of dishes.

The new regulations do not yet apply outside England.

Hi Sid

Forgive my stupidity but what exactly are 'satellite feeds' ......and why won't you get them on an 80cm dish but will on a metre one?

I'm reading up on the forum (and others...forgive me ) ) as much as I can, trying to get a clear idea of what's involved and decide what to get.
Up to now I think I'll go for the Vantage, as suggested and an 80cm or 1 metre motorized dish.
The dish would be placed on a west to south west facing wall with a mostly clear view to the South, is that ok?

Does to Vantage have a built in Freeview capability?

Thanks

Frank

The Vantage X221TSCI Combo satellite and terrestrial receiver does digital terrestrial (DVB-T) at around £140, so if it's Freeview you want, this is the obvious choice in that price range.

If you mean Free-To-View satellite, then it will also run a Sky FTV card in the slot with a little fiddling.

Satellite feeds are temporary signals usually broadcast live from outside locations - sporting events and the like - but can be anything of a transient nature.

They are sometime routed via uplinking and downlinking more than once and via obscure satellites - some of which are old, wobbly and underpowered - hence the need for a slightly larger dish.
