I know this may be a daft question but I'm new
ops:What does CAM stand for ? What do thy do ? looks like a pcmcia card for a laptop I thought a cam was either for photos or opening the valves on my engine LOL

A CAM (conditional access module) would bend if you tried to open the valves and yes it is a programmable PCMCIA card which in turn can take a smart card.
It does not necessarily need a card because being programmable, it can decode encrypted signals if given the right software.
