Default PC link to satcather voyager 111

I am trying to download a software from my pc to a satcatcher voyager 111. However my pc cannot detect the receiver thus making it impossible to download the software. I have been told that I am using the right connection lead. Any ideas what I am doing wrong? Your assistance in this matter would be much appreciated.

There are 2 types of serial cable - a straight wired through, and a nul modem cable that has some of the internal wires crossed over. Are you CERTAIN you have the right sort?? - this is the commonest cause of communications failure. You probably also need the appropriate loader software to allow you to flash the receiver, chances are the pc wont auto detect the receiver.

Its a Null modem cable you need m8 and you also need to download the loader program from here http://www.satcatcher.co.uk/downloads.

Hello Sir, it's me again - I purchased a RS232 cable (9 pin female to female), which I was advised by Maplin Elec. is a null cable M8. Still having problems connecting my pc to the voyager 111 receiver, and I am wondering whether they have given me the right cable. Could you please confirm? Thanks in anticipation.

9-pin female to 9-pin female does indeed sound like a null modem c@ble.

Which c@ble did you have originally? Was it this same 9F to 9F c@ble or was one end male?

A very few receivers require the ordinary serial c@ble i.e. 9F to 9M, but it's pretty rare.

As the guys have said, you can't just use a gender changer on one end as the wires are crossed-over inside the c@ble itself in the null-modem.

It does say clearly 'null-modem' on the satcatcher site though.

Please let us know if this is your original c@ble, or if indeed you have now tried both flavours.

Other than that, I take it you are using the c@ble to connect directly to the COM port on your computer, and not going through a USB-serial converter?

Also, does the serial port work properly normally? Can you test it with something else... like a modem? Can you run a diagnostic on it? What does Windows say about the status of it? I take it you're using Windows?

Do you have a Blutooth adaptor installed on your PC? A mobile phone c@ble connection? Some other kind of device that connects via the serial port?

Quite often these can interfere with the normal operation of the COM ports by hijacking resources normally allocated to them.

An old one, but one of my favourites... Have you rebooted your computer? No, really...

What are the settings for the COM port(s) in Windows Device Manager Properties? It should be 8,n,1 and 9600 baud as standard IIRC.

Finally, are you following the correct patching procedure? You normally start by powering off the receiver at the mains, connecting the c@ble, starting the loader, pressing connect, then powering on the box when the loader prompts you.

Just one or two ideas for you to try

Thank you for your reply. The cable I was previously using was a USB > 9f - and I downloaded the driver software for that cable. I will certainly test the serial port of the pc - One last thing - it would appear that I was not using the correct procedure as per your suggestion. I will give it a go and hopefully get back to you with some good news. In the meantime tks again - I hope the weather is good wherever you are. Here in Essex it's thundering & raining heavily!
