Default New to GPS

I've never purchased GPS before, but I'm really intrigued by them. I'd love to add it to my collection of gadgets. I don't know what to look for in a GPS, which companies have good or bad reputations, or much of anything about them. I was wondering if you guys could give me a jump start in the GPS market.

Thanks!

Well it all depends on what you are looking for.. handheld, in car, PDA based.. what do you intend to do with it... give us an idea so we can direct you better.

Sorry, I should have put more details in my post there. Portability would be nice, so perhaps handheld would probably be the way to go. Most of the time, however, I would be using it in my car. I'm not looking for top of the line or anything, just something to get me going and more familiar with GPS systems. Eventually I'd like to buy a boat, and I'll definately have a gps on there, that's for way down the road though. What are the pro's and cons between built into the car, and handheld?
