Default The portable satellite system from Aldi

Hello again guys

I bought one of these a few weeks ago, as my first dabble into the satellite world out with Sky,

I've got it up & running & surprisingly, i get a decent picture/reception on most of the channels i want to watch mainly on Hotbird 13 Deg East & Astra 19 Deg East.

I did a scan for channels earlier today, and my Astra went from somewhere in the region of 250 Channels to approx 500 channels (although a lot of them are showing as scrambled)

Anyway, to my point, I was reading on here last night, & i saw a thread where someone was talking about a similar system from Maplin's. It was suggested if he had Internet access, it might make life easier in obtaining some additional channels. Can anyone offer me any advice on this front? Is it a case of buying another receiver?

As i said, still new to all this, so any info would be helpful

Hiya.

Some receivers can be 'patched' with firmware (plus provider-specific codes or 'keys') which can be downloaded from the internet.

Some can and some can't. Those that can are wholly dependant on the supply of that receiver-specific software on an ongoing basis, so the long-term prospects for a given receiver are only as good as the supply.

That's why we keep banging on about certain receivers - which is only a small sub-set of those available - they are the ones with a good track record in this respect.

Of course, many people are happy with FTA only, so this 'feature' has no attraction.

What is the make and model of your receiver again? Sorry, my memory sucks!

Just to prove how new i am to this, i have no idea what model my Receiver is, it's a Tevion brand, that came with the dish.

What i was thinking on, was getting a Technomate TM-1600 2CI Super Receiver Patched, to have a play with, my intention is to get a motorised dish eventually. (I assume the Technomate, would still be compatable with a motorised dish?)

I am in the Glasgow area, would i get away with an 80cm dish (trying to keep the dish size as small as i can to please the neighbours )

At present, i'm getting a surprisingly good reception on Astra 19 East with the 40cm portable dish that i got from Aldi

But as i've said many times, any info or advice greatly received.

Yep, sorry, but you need a few more posts before you can send PM's here. It's an anti-spam/nuisance measure.

Yes, I remember now looking at Yorks' recent findings now - the Tevion box is basically the same as the Comag SL65, so you can just use the patches for that. No Premiere at the moment, but some interesting stuff nonetheless.

It is just about good enough, the dish is very small, and fits on with a suction cup that can come unstuck. I expect there to be very little rain fade margin if any at all. The receiver seems OK, but very basic.

IMHO a sky minidish mounted to a pole somewhere on the side of the van would be better coupled to either the supplied 12v/240v receiver, or one purchsed eleswhere. If you will always have mains hook up, or an inverter, then you don't need to bother with a receiver than can take 12v.
