Chelsea Old Boys v World XI Oldies

Chelsea Football Club will be staging a star-studded match next month featuring former greats Gianfranco Zola and Dennis Wise.

The match being organised by another former great, Marcel Desailly, is taking place on Tuesday 7 August, kick-off 7.30pm.

It will be between Marcel’s World XI and a Chelsea Select Team from his playing days at the club (1998 – 2004). Current Chelsea Assistant Coach Steve Clarke is pencilled in to manage the home team, while Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has agreed to manage the Marcel team.

The game is being staged to raise funds for the charity Marcel personally supports, the Laureus Foundation, and for Chelsea FC’s two charity partners. These are CLIC Sargent, the UK’s leading children’s cancer charity, and Right To Play, a global charity who fight disease, poverty and conflict through sport around the world, including Marcel’s original home country of Ghana.

Other ex Chelsea players who have pledged to play are Kevin Hitchcock, Albert Ferrer, Mario Stanic, Bernard Lambourde, Graeme Le Saux, Gustavo Poyet, Roberto Di Matteo, Mark Hughes, Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, Frank Leboeuf, Didier Deschamps and Brian Laudrup.

While the World XI will feature Bernard Lama, Bixente Lizarazu, Alessandro Costacurta, Mauro Tassotti, Angelo Carbone, Leonardo, Laurent Blanc, Demetrio Albertini, Paul Gascoigne, David Ginola, Christian Karembeu, Zvonimir Boban, Roberto Baggio, Youri Djorkaeff, Christophe Dugarry, Ian Wright, Dennis Bergkamp, Franco Baresi, Stefano Eranio and Stefano Nava.

Due to various logistical issues including the potential disruption to, and lack of guarantee, of ticket delivery due to the postal strike, the Marcel Desailly Charity Match on August 7 at Stamford Bridge has been postponed.

The match is likely to be rescheduled for October 10 subject to fixture issues. Tickets purchased for the August date will be valid for the later date.
