Ok I will add my pennyworth.

I have been with NTL/Virgin for about 3 years now and I can only remember losing service for about an hour back when they were upgrading their services to higher speeds. That contrasts with many failures with aol over a BT line.

The cable boxes above ground are considerably better than the overhead BT lines and underground connection boxes that are forever causing slowdown in connection speed.

It's a fantasy of mine, that one day King Richard will branch out into Virgin Sat.
Perverse, I know. ops:

I just see so many poor cable installations. Ther is one up the road that I nearly trip over every day because the bit of green hose they use to protect the cable is pocking up out the pavement. Then ther is the one next to my Mum and Dad. The cable it tacked to the fence, well was the last high winds we had ripped it apart.

No denying cable internet is good, but you are stuck with the one provider. at least with a BT line you can swap to loads of different providers if you are not happy.

Also the people that layed the cables killed off so many trees digging the trenches back in the late 90s >

I do not like Cable

Virgin's newsgroup retention is outstanding, and my brother gets superb reliability and consistent speed with them. The cable technology is light-years ahead of that employed in the 'phone network. BT shafted this country for many many years - under-investing and pissing it up on the profits - and now we get to enjoy that legacy.

I wear several layers of enamel off my teeth every time I see mention of 'Home Highway ISDN' even now. Barstewards. When the revolution comes, all of the old BT senior management - up against the wall.

I totally agree the BT network is on its last legs, just ask BT broadband customers since ther TV service came in. But I would rather go without than go on cable. There phone service is worse than BT.
